EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The No. 7-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team continued its undefeated 2002-03 campaign with a 145-98 victory at Michigan State in its Big Ten Conference opener Saturday (Nov. 9) in the Charles McCaffree Pool. The Wolverines (3-0, 1-0 Big Ten) won seven of the 14 events including both relays against the Spartans (0-5, 0-2 Big Ten).

Tarwater swam the second leg for the 200-medley relay team, which touched the wall in 1:33.59, nearly two seconds ahead of Michigan State's second-place squad. In the final race of the meet Tarwater swam the opening leg in the 200-free relay as U-M finished in 1:24.80. Individually, Tarwater captured the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 46.77.
Freshman Tyler DeBerry (Tucson, Ariz./Sabino HS) earned his first collegiate victory with a time of 15:41.83 in the 1,650-yard freestyle. DeBerry's time was 20 seconds ahead of runner-up David Habel of MSU (16:01.81).
Sophomore Zayd Ma (Ann Arbor, Mich./Clonlara HS) collected his second 200-yard butterfly win of the season as he took the top spot with a time of 1:54.30. Sophomore Chuck Sayao (Mississauga, Ontario/Cawthra Park) gave the Wolverines a one-two finish as he touched at 1:54.57. The nearest Spartan placed third at 1:58.91.
Sophomore Nick Douville (Dayton, Ohio/Archbishop Alter HS) won his first individual title of the season when he out-touched co-captain Jeff Hopwood (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto HS) for first place in the 200-yard individual medley. Douville's time of 1:55.80 was 0.06 seconds ahead of Hopwood's 1:55.86.
Earhart captured his second event title of the 2002-03 season with a first-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:49.97.
Junior Jason Coben (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown HS) posted two NCAA zone diving qualifying marks with scores of 293.10 on the one-meter springboard and 332.25 on the three-meter board. Coben did not score for the team, as he was an exhibition competitor.
The Wolverines take a week off from competition before they head to Austin, Texas, for a dual meet with the University of Texas in the Lee and Joe Jamail Swim Center. The two teams will swim an exhibition meet on Friday (Nov. 22) at 6 p.m. CST and return to the pool Saturday (Nov. 23) for a 1 p.m. dual.
