ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's gymnastics team began its 2002-03 season on Friday (Dec. 6) with the Maize and Blue Intrasquad in front of 512 fans at Cliff Keen Arena. The Maize team defeated the Blue team 161.625-159.375 with senior co-captain Janessa Grieco (Mahopac, N.Y./Carmel HS) leading the way with a winning all-around score of 39.000.

Grieco's all-around score of 39.000 included top-three finishes in all four events.
Junior Elise Ray (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake HS) of the Blue team took top honors in the vault competition, scoring a 9.875 on her attempt. The Maize squad was led by Grieco, who came in second behind Ray with a score of 9.700. Junior Calli Ryals (Elyria, Ohio/Midview HS) also scored a 9.700 on her vault attempt for the Blue team.
In the uneven bars competition, sophomore Lauren Mirkovich (Burlingame, Calif./Notre Dame HS) of the Maize team scored a 9.800 to take the top spot, while Blue sophomore Chelsea Kroll (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny Senior HS) came in second with a score of 9.700.
Ryals scored an impressive 9.875 on the balance beam for first place, while Ray came in second with a score of 9.800. Grieco again led her team with an winning score of 9.850 in the floor exercise. Ryals had a score of 9.825 on her routine, which was good for second place.
"We had more trouble than I thought we would on bars," said head coach Bev Plocki. "We've been a lot more consistent on bars in practice. I thought we did very well on the balance beam, and they are where I expected them to be at this point in the year on the vault and floor exercise. We still have a full month before our first regular-season competition, and I'm very pleased that we know what we need to go back and work on."
The Wolverines will open the season on Saturday, Jan. 11, when they host Ohio State at Cliff Keen Arena. The meet is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
