ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 18-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team posted at least one NCAA consideration time in every swimming event on Thursday evening (Feb. 21) at the Big Ten Conference Championships at Canham Natatorium. With nine consideration marks on the day -- seven individual and two relays -- the Wolverines were able to secure a fourth-place standing with 176 points after the second day of four-day competition.
| | Sara Johnson had U-M's top individual finish on Thursday, placing fifth in the 200 individual medley. |
Michigan had three swimmers who posted multiple NCAA consideration marks in senior Lindsay Carlberg (Carmel, Ind./Carmel HS) and juniors Laura Kaznecki (Wolverine Lake, Mich./Western HS) and Erin Abbey (Cleveland, Ohio/Mayfield HS). Kaznecki and Abbey joined sophomore Annie Weilbacher (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales HS) and freshman Tracy Egnatuk (Albion, Mich./Albion Senior HS) on the 200-yard freestyle relay team that placed sixth in 1:32.75. Kaznecki and Abbey added their second NCAA consideration marks later in the evening during the 50-yard freestyle as the two placed eighth and 11th, respectively, with times of 23.46 and 23.48.
Carlberg was the other member of the Wolverine squad to have multiple NCAA consideration times. In the 400-yard medley relay, Carlberg swam the first leg in 55.39 -- a season best for her in the 100-yard backstroke and an NCAA consideration time -- and helped guide the team to a fourth-place finish with an NCAA consideration mark of 3:42.88. Carlberg also earned an NCAA consideration mark when her time of 2:03.13 in the 200-yard individual medley placed 10th. Finishing ahead of Carlberg in the 200 IM was teammate Sara Johnson (West Bloomfield, Mich./Lahser HS), who placed fifth with an NCAA consideration time of 2:02.60.
One of Michigan's fastest events of the day was in the 500-yard freestyle. Although freshman Amy McCullough (West Bloomfield, Mich./Mercy HS) and sophomore Emily-Clare Fenn (Westport, Conn./Staples HS) posted the sixth and seventh fastest times in the event, respectively, the two placed ninth and 10th overall because they were competing in the B final. McCullough finished with the top time in the B final at 4:50.87 and Fenn was runner-up with a time of 4:51.28. Both times were NCAA consideration marks.
In one-meter diving, the Maize and Blue was led by senior Lindsey McElroy (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills HS), who placed 20th overall with a score of 222.60. Freshman Alexis Goolik (Highland, Ind./Highland HS) followed in 22nd with a mark of 219.85 and sophomore Tealin Kelemen (Riverton, N.J./Moorestown Friends School) rounded out the top three for Michigan with a 24th-place finish (211.70).
The Big Ten Championships continue through Saturday at Canham Natatorium, with preliminaries beginning at 11 a.m. and finals starting at 7 p.m. each day.

U-M Head Coach Jim Richardson
On the team's performance ... "We had some people do well today like Erin Abbey and Sara Johnson. Some of the girls I were hoping would be faster seemed to run out of gas towards the end of the night. Our 400-yard medley relay seemed really tired although Lindsay Carlberg swam a good first leg in the backstroke. Hopefully we'll come out tomorrow and be able to swim our best."
