STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Freshman Nathan Brannen (Cambridge, Ontario/Preston HS) posted an NCAA provisional mark in his fourth different event of the season Saturday afternoon (Feb. 9) in helping the University of Michigan men's track and field team to third place at the USTCA Collegiate Challenge at Ashenfelter Indoor Track. With 59.75 points, the Wolverines trailed only Indiana (105.25) and host Penn State (99.25).
Brannen, who was the No. 1-ranked high school student in the world in the 800-meter run last year, won the 800 meters in 1:48.73 and was the only member of the Maize and Blue to post a victory Saturday. The win continues a hot streak for Brannen as he won the mile last week at the George Mason Patriot Games (Feb. 2) with a time of 4:02.12. Along with the 800-meter run and the mile, Brannen has also posted NCAA provisional marks in the 3,000-meter run and as part of U-M's distance medley relay team.
The 800-meter run was Michigan's strongest event of the day as junior Jeremy Schneider (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Andover HS) placed fifth in the event with an NCAA provisional mark of 1:50.11. Schneider also was a member of the victorious distance medley relay on Friday evening (Feb. 8), marking the fifth consecutive meet in which he has placed first in at least one event.
In the field events, senior Robert Arnold (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty HS) cleared a height of 6-9 in the high jump but was edged out for first place. Ryan Olkowksi of Penn State also cleared 6-9 but won the event as he accomplished the height in fewer attempts.
Michigan will return home next week to host the Harold Silverston Invitational at the U-M Indoor Track Building on Saturday, Feb. 16. Field events will start at 9:30 a.m. and track events will begin at noon.
