AUSTIN, Texas -- University of Michigan sophomore Annie Weilbacher (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales HS) earned her second All-America Honorable Mention award in as many days on Friday evening (March 22) at the NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships by tying for 12th in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 54.18. Three other Wolverines competed in individual events on Friday, but none qualified for the finals. The next highest result came from sophomore Kelli Stein (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Waterson HS), who placed 24th in the 100-yard breaststroke with a mark of 1:02.94. Senior Lindsay Carlberg's (Carmel, Ind./Carmel HS) preliminary time of 56.02 in the 100-yard backstroke was good for a 31st-place finish.
Michigan did not have as good of fortune in its other two events. In the 200-yard freestyle and the 200-yard medley relay, the Wolverines were disqualified for false starts. Sophomore Amy McCullough (West Bloomfield, Mich./Mercy HS) was the Maize and Blue's representative in the 200-yard freestyle, and she joined Stein, Weilbacher and Carlberg in the 200-yard medley relay.
The NCAA Championships continued to be a fast meet on Friday as records were broken in three events, with the highlight coming from California sophomore Natalie Coughlin. With a time of 49.97 in the 100-yard backstroke, Coughlin set American, U.S. Open and NCAA records while becoming the first woman ever to swim the event in under 50 seconds.
Coughlin also accounted for a new record in the 100-yard butterfly, while Stanford teamed up for an American record in the 200-yard medley relay. Coughlin's time of 50:01 in the 100-yard butterfly established NCAA, American and U.S. Open records, while the team of Amy Wagner, Shelly Ripple, Tara Kirk and Lacey Boutwell set an American record in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:37.79.
The NCAA Championships will conclude on Saturday (March 23), with preliminaries beginning at 11 a.m. CST and finals at 7 p.m. CST. All four Wolverines will swim in individual events, with McCullough in the 1,650-yard freestyle, Carlberg in the 200-yard backstroke, Weilbacher in the 100-yard freestyle and Stein in the 200-yard breaststroke.
