Michigan Blanked by Minnesota in Big Ten Quarterfinal

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team had its 2002 Big Ten Championship run come to an abrupt ending Friday afternoon (April 26), losing a 4-0 quarterfinal match to Minnesota at Ohio State's Stickney Tennis Center. The Wolverines (15-8) lost their seventh straight match to the Golden Gophers in conference tournament action, dropping the doubles point and surrendering matches in the first three singles matches completed.
Minnesota won the doubles point with victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots and the match at No. 3 was stopped once the team point was clinched. Harsh Mankad and Thomas Haug defeated junior Chris Shaya (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Saddlebrook Academy, Fla.) and sophomore Brett Baudinet (Rarotonga, Cook Islands/King's College) at the top spot. Manuel Lievano and Reven Stephens secured the doubles point for the Gophers with an 8-5 victory at No. 2 over the Wolverines tandem of senior Henry Beam (Kalamazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix HS) and freshman Matt Lockin (Lilburn, Ga./S.D. Independent Study).
The Golden Gophers ended the Wolverines' conference tournament appearance for the second straight season with straight-set singles victories at the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 6 slots. Alex Zharinov clinched advancement to the semifinals for the Gophers with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Lockin.
Michigan awaits selection to the 2002 NCAA Championship field, which will be announced Thursday, May 2, at 6:30 p.m. EDT. The Wolverines will be making their fifth straight NCAA Tournament appearance and third under head coach Mark Mees.
