ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 30-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team dominated in-state rival and Big Ten Conference foe Michigan State Wednesday night (April 3), winning a 5-2 match at the Varsity Tennis Center. The win was the 11th straight for the Wolverines against Spartans, as they claimed straight-set victories in four of the six singles matches.
Michigan (11-5, 2-3 Big Ten) started things off by securing the doubles point as senior Henry Beam (Kalamazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix HS) and freshman Matt Lockin (Lilburn, Ga./S.D. Independent Study) improved their overall record to 15-1, dominating Michigan State's Chris Mitchell and Eric Simonton at No. 2 by an 8-2 score. Before Beam and Lockin clinched the point for the Wolverines, sophomore Anthony Jackson (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet HS) and senior Greg Novak (Stoney Creek, Ontario/Cardinal Newman HS) outlasted the Spartan team of Goran Topalo and Mike Jonckheere 8-5 at No. 3. MSU prevented a sweep as Adam Hourani and Jimmy McGuire won the top doubles match in a tiebreaker, 9-8(5), over sophomore Brett Baudinet (Auckland, New Zealand/King's College) and junior Chris Shaya (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Saddlebrook Academy, Fla.).
Michigan carried the momentum into singles play, winning four out of the six matches in straight sets to claim the team victory. The Wolverines' No. 39-ranked Beam easily took care of Mitchell at No. 1, winning 6-1, 6-1. Lockin also continued his strong singles play at No. 3, defeating Topalo by a 6-4, 6-4 score. Jackson and Novak rounded out the scoring, winning matches at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively. The Spartans closed out the evening with a pair of three-set wins as Andy Formanczyk won a tough match against senior Ben Cox (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake HS) at No. 2 and Cameron Marshall deafeated freshman David Anving (Tvaaker, Sweden/Varbergs Gymnasieskolu) at the No. 6 spot.
