Wolverines Take Five of Six in Singles to Down Lions

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The No. 30-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team claimed its fourth straight win and sixth in its last seven matches, defeating Penn State by a 5-2 score Saturday afternoon (April 6) at the Sarni Tennis Center. The Wolverines (12-5, 3-3 Big Ten) rallied for the victory with wins in five of the six singles matches after losing the doubles point.
The Nittany Lions (7-10, 0-5 Big Ten) managed to win the doubles point with victories in two of the three matches. Clint Keithley and Jamie Gresh won an 8-3 match at No. 1. The PSU duo of Roddy Cantey and Michael Anderson clinched the team point with a 9-7 victory against U-M's Anthony Jackson (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet HS) and senior Greg Novak (Stoney Creek, Ontario/Cardinal Newman HS) at No. 3. The Wolverines' stellar tandem of senior co-captain Henry Beam (Kalamazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix HS) and freshman Matt Lockin (Lilburn, Ga./S.D. Independent Study) kept the Lions from a doubles sweep with an 8-6 victory against Brad Nudell and Matt Frakes at No. 2.
U-M stormed back in singles competition to claim its 11th consecutive victory against Penn State, winning matches at the No. 2 through No. 6 spots. Lockin, Novak and freshman David Anving (Tvaaker, Sweden/Varbergs Gymnasieskolu) won in straight sets for the Wolverines, while senior Ben Cox (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake HS) and Jackson pulled out three-set wins after dropping the middle set in their matches. The Nittany Lions gained their only point of the day as 106th-ranked Gresh upset No. 39-ranked Beam at the top spot (7-6, 6-3).
Michigan concludes the road trip tomorrow (Sunday, April 7, noon) against No. 14-ranked Ohio State at the Stickney Tennis Center in Columbus, Ohio.
