No. 8 Wolverines Dominate No. 12 Spartans on the Water

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The No. 8 University of Michigan rowing team continued its solid start to the 2002 season by winning five of six races against No. 12 Michigan State today (Saturday, April 6) on the water of Lake Ovid at Sleepy Hollow State Park. All four of the varsity boats won their races, and the first varsity eight earned its second victory of the season to help the Wolverines team effort.
Michigan first varsity eight turned in a time of 7:04.20 and defeated Michigan State by over eight seconds to improve its record to 2-1 on the season after splitting two races last weekend at the ACC/Big Ten Double Dual. The Wolverines' second varsity eight, the 2001 NCAA champion, extended its winning streak to 13 races by defeating the Spartans by nearly 16 seconds. The boat finished the 2,000-meter course in 7:17.90.
The Wolverines' first varsity four also won big by crossing the finished line in 8:16.60, over 13 seconds faster than Michigan State. The second varsity four race was the closest of the day, with Michigan winning with a time of 8:31.80 and Michigan State's "A" boat coming in second with a time of 8:33.69.
The Wolverines' next race is the Buckeye Invitational on Saturday, April 13, in Columbus, Ohio. The 12th-ranked Spartans and No. 3 Ohio State, the host institution, will be two of the teams competing at the regatta at Griggs Reservoir on the Scioto River.
