NORMAN, Okla. -- Led by a first-place effort on the horizontal bar by senior Daniel Diaz-Luong (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt HS), the University of Michigan men's gymnastics team competed in the Individual Event Finals at the NCAA Championships on Saturday (April 6) in the University of Oklahoma's Lloyd Noble Center.
Diaz-Luong captured two of the team's four All-America awards. Beside his championship on the horizontal bar (9.612), Diaz-Luong also finished in third place on the parallel bars (8.875) to capture the sixth All-America award in his Wolverine career. The top six finishers in each event earn All-America honors, as do the top six Americans in each event.
Also earning All-America status were junior Conan Parzuchowski (Northville, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit HS), who earned his honor on the still rings for the second consecutive year, finishing sixth (9.250), and freshman Kevin George (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral HS), who captured his by finishing among the top six Americans on the pommel horse, taking seventh overall (8.775).
Also competing for the Wolverines were senior Justin Toman (Wallingford, Conn./Lyman Hall HS) and Brad Kenna (Barberton, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit HS) and freshman Edward Umphrey (Albuquerque, N.M./La Cueva HS). Toman and Umphrey both finished in seventh place, on the still rings (9.212) and vault (9.187), respectively, while Kenna finished in eighth place on the horizontal bar with a score of 6.650.
