PALO ALTO, Calif. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team ran six distance athletes at the Cardinal Twilight Friday night (May 3) at Stanford University's Cobb Track, with senior tri-captain Katie Jazwinski (Grand Rapids, Mich./West Catholic HS) leading the way.
Jazwinski, who holds this year's second-fastest time in the 1,500 meters in the Big Ten Conference, lowered her personal-best time to 4:21.38 for an 11th-place finish and her second NCAA provisional mark of the year. Her first provisional time in the event came at the Miami Invitational (April 13) as she set a meet record with a then personal-best run of 4:22.47.
Stephanie Hirtle (Salmon Arm, B.C./Salmon Arm SS) and Rachel Strutz (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City HS) were Michigan's other two competitors in the 1,500 meters. Hirlte finished 28th with a time of 4:36.70 and Sturtz took 31st place with a time of 4:43.07.
In the 800-meter run freshman Tracy Egnatuk (Albion, Mich./Albion HS) ran a personal-best time of 2:09.18 to claim the Wolverines' top spot in the race, crossing the line in 15th place. Egnatuk's run lowered her personal best by 0.72 seconds as her previous best mark was 2:10.00 set at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational (April 19).
Ursula Taylor (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg HS) placed 18th in the 800-meter run, finishing with a season-best time of 2:10.29. The 2002 Big Ten indoor champion in the 600-meter run had a previous outdoor season best of 2:11.84 at the Mt. SAC Relays (April 20).
Andrea Parker (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) also set a personal-best mark. As the Maize and Blue's lone runner in the 5,000 meters, she clocked in at 16:56.46, nearly five seconds under her previous best time. The time earned her a 19th place finish in the event. With the sub-17:00 run, Parker ranks second on the U-M roster to Jazwinski (16:02.78) in the 5,000-meter run.
With the split squad weekend, the Wolverines return to action Sunday (May 5) in Columbus, Ohio, for the Jesse Owens Classic. Field events begin competition in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium with April Phillips (Fraser, Mich./Fraser HS) in the hammer throw starting things off at 9 a.m. Running events get under way at 9:30 a.m. with Keri Kirk (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron HS) in the 400-meter dash.
