BATON ROUGE, La. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team received its first points at the 2002 NCAA Outdoor Championships with Katie Jazwinski's (Grand Rapids, Mich./West Catholic HS) two points in her final collegiate race, on Friday (May 31).

The senior All-American fell back in the pack during the latter portion of the race due to a stitch in her side. The stitch slowed her pace, but donning the Maize and Blue for the final time, Jazwinski continued to run strongly and finished with a time of 16:23.44 on the track at Bernie Moore Stadium.
By placing in the top eight overall, Jazwinski joined teammate April Phillips (Fraser, Mich./Fraser HS) as an All-American in 2002. Phillips earned the honor on Wednesday as one of the top eight Americans in the hammer throw, with a toss of 189-10 placing her 12th overall.
Jazwinski's two points put Michigan in a six-way tie for 47th place with one day left in the NCAA Outdoor Championships. UCLA and South Carolina are atop the standings with 44 and 40 points, respectively.
Also competing for the Wolverines Friday was sophomore thrower Melissa Bickett (Akron, Ohio/Revere HS). Bickett, who entered the championship meet with the nation's top mark of 186-5 (Penn Relays, April 26), finished 11th with a distance of 169-1. The mark came on her second throw in the first flight of preliminaries.
This marks the second consecutive year Jazwinski earned an All-America honor. Last year at the NCAA Indoor Championships she also placed seventh in the 5,000-meter run. With her All-America run in the 5,000-meter run, the Wolverines have complied 16 All-America citations in the event since 1985.
Jazwinski ends her Michigan career as a two-time track and field All-American, five-time Big Ten champion and the 2002 Big Ten Indoor Athlete of the Meet. In addition to her athletic accomplishments, Jazwinski was also a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and a 2002 Verizon Academic All-District second-team recipient.
The Wolverines' 2002 track and field season comes to an end Saturday (June 1) as outdoor school record holder April Phillips (Fraser, Mich./Fraser HS) competes in the shot put at 4:45 p.m. CDT. Phillips enters the event as the 20th-ranked thrower in the nation with a personal-best and school-record distance of 52-1 (Big Ten Outdoor Championships, May 18).
