MacKenzie is slated to stroke the eight, with Marten in the five seat and Johnson in the bow. MacKenzie and Marten had been rowing in a different boat than Johnson throughout the summer, but they were brought together in the eight by head coach Tom Terhaar following the USRowing National Team time trials. Mary Whipple (coxswain), Caryn Davies, Maite Urtasun, Alison Cox, Anna Mickelson and Dana Peirce are the other members of the boat.
Johnson was the first U-M alumna to participate in the rowing world championships when she stroked USRowing's eight to a fourth-place finish at the 2001 World Championships in Lucerne, Switzerland. MacKenzie and Marten are each making their first appearance at the world championships.
The USRowing roster for the 2002 World Championships includes 14 Olympians and 23 first-time senior national team members, while 32 team members have won a total of 58 medals at past world championships. With three selections each, Michigan and California have the most alumnae on the women's national team.
Twenty-four events will be contested at this year's world championships with the U.S. racing in 23. Last year, the U.S. won four medals at the world championships, including silver medals in the lightweight women's quadruple sculls and lightweight women's pair and bronze medals in the women's quadruple sculls and lightweight men's eight.
USRowing is the non-profit membership organization recognized by the United States Olympic Committee as the national governing body for the sport of rowing in the United States.

"I came to Michigan with the ultimate goal of making the national team. I think it speaks volumes about the U-M program that we have three rowers on the U.S. team this year."
Kate Johnson
"Representing the United States takes on a different significance since Sept. 11. I am very excited about the ability of the U.S. to perform this summer, and I know that hearing "Go USA" as we come down the course will give me pride and definitely the goose bumps."
Kate MacKenzie
"It is a huge honor to represent the United States and to compete against the best rowers in the world. Without the drive and commitment taught to me through rowing at Michigan, I wouldn't have been able to achieve this goal."
