Donald R. Shepherd Women's Gymnastics
Training Center Dedication
Saturday, Aug. 31, 2002
University of Michigan Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Bill Martin and women's gymnastics head coach Beverly Plocki dedicated the Donald R. Shepherd Women's Gymnastics Training Center on Saturday, Aug. 31.
"I want to thank Don for being such a dedicated supporter of the women's gymnastics program and for everything he has done to make this training facility possible," said Plocki. "I also want to thank everyone else who made today a reality. This is truly amazing. Michigan women's gymnastics now has an incredible place to call home."
The 22,000-square-foot facility, made possible by a $3.5 million gift from Shepherd, a Michigan alumnus, is the new practice and training home of the Wolverines. The state-of-the-art complex has 17,000 square feet of training area which is outfitted with the latest in gymnastics training equipment, including resi- and free-foam pits at each event. There is an additional 5,000 square feet which houses a training room, offices for the coaching staff, a locker room, a team lounge, and a study area for the student-athletes.
The facility is located off State Street near Michigan's Varsity Tennis Center and offers a panoramic view of the outdoor tennis courts, the U-M Golf Course and the city of Ann Arbor through the large wall of windows on the building's north side.
