Wolverines Dominate North Carolina in Season Opener

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Junior April Fronzoni (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West HS) scored once in each half as the 2001 NCAA champion University of Michigan field hockey team began its 2002 regular-season schedule with a 2-0 victory over North Carolina Saturday afternoon (Aug. 31) in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge at UNC's Francis E. Henry Stadium.

Fronzoni

Fronzoni scored with 6:38 left in the first half to open the scoring and added an insurance goal with 20:17 remaining in the game, which was a rematch of last year's NCAA Tournament first-round pairing that U-M won 5-2 in Ann Arbor.

Michigan dominated on both sides of the field, recording 13 shots and forcing Tar Heel goaltender Amy Tran to make eight saves. Fronzoni, senior Molly Powers (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest HS) and senior/junior Stephanie Johnson (Houston, Texas/The Kinkaid School) all tallied three shots apiece.

The Wolverines were also up to task on defense, limiting North Carolina to a lone shot. U-M goaltender Molly Maloney (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest HS), who was not required to make any saves on the day, recorded the fourth solo shutout of her career. North Carolina earned five penalty corners, while U-M was awarded four corners, two in each half.

Michigan will face Wake Forest Sunday (Sept. 1) at 2:30 p.m. in its second and final game of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge before returning home to begin a nine-game homestand.

With the victory, the Wolverines earned their first win against North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C. U-M was 0-2 in two previous contests in Chapel Hill and held a 1-5 record against the Tar Heels overall before Saturday's contest.

April Fronzoni recorded the eighth multi-goal effort of her career, scoring two goals. The last time Fronzoni found the back of the cage at least twice in one game was her hat trick against North Carolina in last year's first round of the NCAA Tournament (Nov. 10).
