Gandolph's Double-Double Helps U-M Sweep Clemson

MALIBU, Calif. -- Jennifer Gandolph (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove HS) recorded her second double-double in as many matches with 15 kills and 15 digs and led the University of Michigan volleyball team to a 3-0 (30-27, 30-26, 30-25) sweep of the Clemson Tigers this afternoon (Saturday, Aug. 31) in its second match of the Howdy's Pepperdine Classic. Chantel Reedus (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South HS) led the team with an attack percentage of .391 (13-4-23), and Erin Moore (Tiffin, Ohio/Columbian HS) added 11 kills and eight digs.
For the second consecutive night, Michigan found itself in tight games at the beginning of the match. The first game was tied 12 times, including as late as 27-27. Gandolph stood out in the game, recording seven kills. She had back-to-back kills to help lead Michigan to its largest lead of the match at 21-17, and she drilled home the final attack to give U-M the game 30-27.
The second game started much differently, as Michigan fell into a 3-1 hole at the start. Sophomore Carrie Ritchie (Mansfield, Ohio/Madison Comprehensive HS) gave U-M a 4-3 lead with one of her four service aces in the match, but the lead did not last long. Two service aces by the Tigers helped them take a 10-5 lead. Kills by Gandolph and Nicole Poquette (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven HS) got the Wolverines back in the game at 12-12. Michigan took control of the game from there and ended the contest on a service ace from Ritchie to win 30-26 and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Michigan put the match away by hitting .435 (24-4-46) on the way to a 30-25 win in the third and final game. Reedus took command, picking up nine kills in 12 attempts with just one error (.667), while Gandolph provided the majority of the defense by digging seven Clemson attacks.
Michigan concludes the Howdy's Pepperdine Classic later this evening (Saturday, Aug. 31) with a 5 p.m. PDT match against No. 8 Pepperdine, the host of the tournament.
