BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Despite an effort to come from behind in the second half, the University of Michigan women's soccer team lost for the first time this season with a 1-0 defeat against Georgia at the Alabama-Birmingham Nike Classic. The Wolverines found themselves behind early, as the Bulldogs scored the game's lone goal at the 16:57 mark of the first half, and could not fins a way to solve the Georgia defense.
Georgia junior Ashley King scored the game-winner in the 17th minute, knocking a rebound off the hands of Michigan goalkeeper Suzie Grech (Narberth, Pa./The Shipley School) and into the goal. The ball was passed to King out of the midfield, sending the Bulldog forward in on a one-on-one against defender Andrea Kayal (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills HS). Grech made a good save on the initial shot but could not corral the rebound before King put it away.
Michigan could not find the equalizer despite outshooting the Bulldogs 5-3 and forcing Georgia keeper Ashley Lindley to make four saves in the second half. The late Wolverine push was led by junior Erika Kleinholz (West Ridgeville, Ohio/Elyria Catholic HS), who had three shots and directed two on goal.
The Maize and Blue returns home to open its Big Ten Conference season with a pair of games. The Wolverines host Iowa next Friday (Sept. 20) at 4 p.m. and play Illinois Sunday (Sept. 22) at 11:30 a.m. on U-M Soccer Field.

QUOTES
Michigan Head Coach Debbie Rademacher
On the game ... "It was an ugly game. They played a high pressure style and were looking for us to cough up the ball. We really needed to play a possession game but just couldn't find a way to string things together until later in the game. It was tough, nothing really seemed to go our way."
NOTES
• The loss snaps Michigan's five-game winning streak. With five wins to begin the season, Michigan tied the 1998 season for the fastest start in the nine-year history of the program.
• At 2-4, Georgia has lost three of its four games to ranked foes (No. 18 Clemson, No. 13 Wake Forest and No. 12 Connecticut), and three of the Bulldogs' losses have come in overtime.
