Big Ten Player of the Week -- Again
For the second straight week, a Wolverine has received Big Ten Field Hockey Offensive Player of the Week honors. Senior forward Molly Powers (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest HS) earned the honor for the first time in her career after netting three goals in Michigan's two matches in last weekend's BIG EAST/Big Ten Challenge, including her first career overtime game-winning goal in Sunday's (Sept. 15) 2-1 (ot) victory against Connecticut. Powers also netted a pair of markers in Saturday's (Sept. 14) 6-2 win over No. 14 Boston College for her second straight multi-goal game. Junior forward April Fronzoni (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West HS) was named the league's top offensive player for Sept. 10, while junior defender Stephanie Johnson (Houston, Texas/The Kinkaid School) received the defensive award.
Century Club
Head coach Marcia Pankratz picked up her 100th career victory on Sunday (Sept. 15) against Connecticut and owns an all-time record of 100-40 (.714) at Michigan. Pankratz, who already ranks as the winningest coach in U-M field hockey history, has led the Wolverines to 18 or more wins in each of the last three seasons, including a school-record 20 in 1999.
Defending the Realm
The Wolverines own a 5-1 record in non-conference play this season and extended a win streak with their two victories against No. 14 Boston College and Connecticut. Michigan has not dropped a game to an opponent from another conference except the ACC since the 1999 campaign, posting 24 straight wins. U-M's last loss to a non-ACC opponent was on Sept. 12, 1999, when it dropped a 3-0 contest to James Madison. This weekend's opponents, Temple and Northeastern, are from the Atlantic 10 and America East.
Four Score and ...
Michigan's 20 goals have been scored by just four players. April Fronzoni leads the team with eight, while Stephanie Johnson and Molly Powers have each netted five markers. Senior forward/midfielder Jessica Rose (Lititz, Pa./Warwick HS) has contributed two goals.
Home Sweet Home
The Wolverines are currently enjoying a four-game winning streak and are a perfect 4-0 this season at Ocker Field. Michigan has won the last six matches in front of its home crowd, dating back to last season's NCAA Regional.
Down, But Not Out
Michigan has given up the game's first goal in each of the last three outings but has come back to win each contest, scoring multiple unanswered goals. Against Ball State on Sept. 8, U-M netted five straight goals to win by a 5-1 margin, while on Saturday (Sept. 14) against No. 14 Boston College, the Wolverines scored six straight goals en route to a 6-2 win over the Eagles. In Sunday's (Sept. 15) 2-1 (ot) win over Connecticut, U-M notched two straight goals after falling behind.
Inside the Numbers
The Wolverines have outscored their opponents by an 18-4 margin over the last four games and 20-6 this season ... U-M has held opponents to under 10 shots in five of its six outings and is outshooting its foes by a 121-42 margin this season. Michigan is averaging 20.2 shots per game while its opponents are posting 7.0 per contest.
The Powers That Be
Molly Powers has netted five goals in her last three games, including back-to-back multi-goal efforts against Ball State (Sept. 8) and No. 14 Boston College (Sept. 14). After only six games, Powers, who netted her first career overtime game-winning goal in a 2-1 (ot) victory over Connecticut on Sunday (Sept. 15), is three goals shy of her goal total from 2001 (8), recorded over 23 appearances. Powers cracked Michigan's top 10 for career points over the weekend and currently sits in ninth place with 75, five points shy of Dawn Kohut (1976-77), who is in eighth place. Powers also moved up to eighth place on the career goal-scoring chart with her 34th career marker and is one away from joining Marty Maugh (1980-83) at seventh place.
