ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Three goals in the first 10 minutes of play, including two by junior defender Stephanie Johnson (Houston, Texas/The Kinkaid School), propelled the No. 3-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team to its fifth straight win on Saturday morning (Sept. 21), an 8-0 shutout of Temple at Ocker Field.
The Wolverines posted seven goals in the first half and saw seven different players score as they registered their third shutout victory of the season. The U-M offense recorded 37 shots in the contest, including 22 on goal, while the defense limited the Owls to just one shot, which was blocked.
Johnson put Michigan on the board 1:44 into the game on a penalty corner, then senior Molly Powers (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest HS) made it 2-0 just 3:18 into the contest when she scored off a rebound from a shot by junior forward April Fronzoni (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West HS). Johnson added her second marker, and fifth in the last three games, at 9:21, netting a shot from 20 feet out after a blocked shot on a penalty corner.
The Wolverines continued to pour on the goals in the latter stage of the first half, with junior forward/midfielder Laura Woitkewitsch (Cologne, Germany) netted her first career marker at 17:11. Michigan added three more goals in a 4:30 span as the stanza winded down, with sophomore forward Jenny Zangara (Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Hills HS), senior forward/midfielder Jessica Rose (Lititz, Pa./Warwick HS) and sophomore midfielder Jessica Blake (Perth, Western Australia) scoring at 26:37, 29:51 and 31:07, respectively.
With U-M up by a 7-0 margin, the game was delayed for nearly 40 minutes after Temple goalkeeper Erin Conroy was hit in the face by a shot from Blake off a Michigan penalty corner. Conroy was taken off the field on a stretcher and was replaced by Mary Zakrewski.
In the second half, Fronzoni posted the stanza's only goal, scoring from the middle of the circle at 66:12 of a pass from Powers.
Sophomore goalkeeper Molly Maloney (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest HS) was credited with her third shutout of the season in the win but was not forced to make a save.
Michigan, winner of five straight, will continue its school-record nine-game homestand on Sunday (Sept. 22) when it hosts No. 12 Northeastern. Game time is slated for 2 p.m. at Ocker Field on the campus of U-M.

QUOTES
Michigan Head Coach Marcia Pankratz
On the contest ... "I was really happy with the way we played. It all came together, everyone played well, and we stuck with what we were trying to practice tactically. I thought we were really sharp today, and it was evident in how we came out in the first 10 minutes."
On scoring first for the first time in four games ... "You could tell everybody was really sharp today in our skills and I figured it was probably going to go our way. I was happy about that."
On getting everyone significant playing time ... "Experience is really important down the stretch, giving key players a rest is really important, and also having some versatility and trying people in different positions is important in case we need that in the (NCAA) Tournament. I thought that was really helpful and everyone adapted really well."
On the defense ... "They were solid as a rock."
