BELLEVILLE, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's rowing team hosted Michigan State and Eastern Michigan for a rowing exhibition this morning (Saturday, Sept. 21) on Belleville Lake. The teams rowed three flights of eights and one flight of fours with each flight completing three seven-minute pieces. The event was not timed or scored.
Michigan, Michigan State and Eastern Michigan each boated crews in the first and second flight of eights, but only Michigan and Michigan State participated in the third flight of eights. All three schools had a four in the final flight.
The format of the event was unique. The first flight began rowing at 8:30 a.m. with the others following every 15 minutes. For the first piece, the crews were not to exceed a stroke rating of 22 strokes per minute. The stroke cap increased to 24 strokes per minute for the second piece and 26 strokes per minute for the final piece. The stroke cap forced the crews to focus on technique and strength to generate maximum power on each stroke.
Michigan holds its annual Boathouse Day next Saturday (Sept. 28) at Belleville Lake. The Boathouse Day festivities begin at 10 a.m. and conclude with an alumni row at approximately 12:30 p.m. Fans will have a chance to get in a boat and try rowing with members of the team throughout the morning. In addition, two former Michigan rowers who are currently competing in the eight for the United States National Team at the 2002 Rowing World Championships will be on hand to discuss their experiences at the international competition. The event is free and open to the public.

Q U O T E S
Head Coach Mark Rothstein
On the event ... "It's good to have some quality competition early in the season. We just constrained things so it would be more productive. I think keeping the stoke rating low benefited everyone. All three teams got a lot out of today."
On how the U-M boats fared ... "It's really early in the year for us, so it was good to get some pieces in and get some timing work. It was also nice to go out, watch the workout and talk to the crews in between the pieces. I really felt like we applied what we have done in practice."
