"I'm excited to have Scott Mallernee join me as the volunteer assistant coach at Michigan," said Maloney. "Scott is an outstanding young coach. I'm happy he was available to join our staff."
Mallernee is the third coach added to Maloney's baseball coaching staff as he joins assistants John Lowery and Jason Murray.
Mallernee heads to Michigan after spending the 2002 season as a volunteer assistant baseball coach at the University of Kansas.
A native of Mansfield, Mo., and 1994 graduate of Mansfield High School, Mallernee played one season of junior college baseball at Jefferson College where he earned his associate's degree in physical education (1996). He played one year at Oral Roberts (1997) before transferring to Missouri Western for two seasons (1998-99). He earned a B.S. in physical education at Missouri Western.
He was a catcher both seasons at Missouri Western and was captain of the Griffons as a senior, when he earned GTE CoSIDA Academic All-American District VII honors.
Mallernee earned his M.S. in education with an emphasis in sports administration while serving as a baseball intern at Mississippi State in 2000. He was an assistant coach at Eastern Kentucky in 2001 and coached three All-Ohio Valley Conference players as the team placed third in the conference tournament.
Mallernee, 25, is married to the former Carrie Stratton and they reside in Ypsilanti.
