TULSA, Okla. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team improved its dual match season record to 2-1, defeating Tulsa 5-2 Sunday (Jan. 26) at the Case Tennis Center. The Wolverines dropped all three doubles matches but regrouped to win five of six in singles competition to bring home the victory.
The Golden Hurricane began the day by outlasting U-M in the three doubles matches to claim the first point, but the Wolverines immediately regained the momentum thanks to their strong singles play. Sophomore Josef Fischer (Nuremberg, Germany/Brandenton Academy, Fla.) gave Michigan its first point, closing out Aleksander Charpantidis in straight sets (6-4, 6-2) at No. 5. It was an afternoon of three-set victories for U-M from that point on, as sophomores David Anving (Tvvaaker, Sweden/Varbergs Gymnasieskola) and Vinny Gossain (Okemos, Mich./Okemos HS) earned wins at No. 4 and No. 6, respectively. Anving improved his dual match record to 3-0 with a win over Shunsuke Shimizu (2-6, 6-4, 7-5), while Gossain won his second straight singles match, posting a 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 win over Tulsa's Olof Sjolund.
U-M continued to storm through singles action as junior Anthony Jackson (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet HS) picked up his first victory of the dual match season, winning the battle over Ryan Livesay at No. 2, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1. Sophomore Michael Rubin (Canton Ohio/Canton Central Catholic HS) closed out the scoring with a three-set victory over No. 43 Alejandro Tejerina (4-6, 7-6, 6-3) at the top spot. Rubin is now a perfect 3-0 in dual match play and a team-best 14-4 overall.
