BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team improved its record to 2-0 on the road in Big Ten play, defeating Indiana by a 3-0 margin (30-23, 30-22, 30-23) Friday (Oct. 10) at University Gymnasium. Junior Jennifer Gandolph (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove HS) led the Wolverines with 14 kills as U-M won its third straight match in an opponent's arena.
The Wolverines hit .250 (47 kills, 19 errors, 112 attempts) for the match and held the Hoosiers to .088 (39-29-113), including .050 or worse in the final two games. U-M is now 6-0 in games on the road in the Big Ten after traveling to Michigan State and Indiana and coming away with 3-0 victories.
The Wolverines played from behind for the majority of game one and trailed by as many as three points before calling a timeout at 14-11. Following the timeout, Michigan came back to close the gap and eventually took the lead at 18-17 off a kill by junior Lisa Gamalski (Milwaukee, Wis./Catholic Memorial HS). Gamalski began a five-point run that put U-M up 21-17 and in control of the game. Indiana closed to within two points at 24-22, but Michigan responded with six of the final seven points, including two service aces, to win 30-23.
Game two was all Wolverines as Michigan jumped out to a five-point lead at 11-6 and never looked back, leading by as many as nine en route to a 30-22 victory. Gandolph notched five kills in the stanza to lead U-M, which hit .220 and held Indiana to a .054 percentage.
The final game was a bit of a fight for Michigan, as Indiana traded points with the Wolverines until Michigan could get a 13-10 lead, causing Indiana to take a timeout. The Hoosiers fought back to tie the match at 20, but Michigan scored 10 of the match's final 13 points, eventually closing the door with back-to-back kills by senior Erin Moore (Tiffin, Ohio/Columbian HS).
Moore finished the match with 11 kills, her 14th match of the season with double-digit totals. Senior Nicole Poquette (Grand Haven. Mich./Grand Haven HS) hit .467 (9-2-15), including a few key terminations down the stretch, while Gamalski ran the offense and dished out 39 helpers. Defensively, Michigan was led by junior Sarah Allen's (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechaniscburg HS) 10 digs, while freshman Megan Bowman (St. John, Ind./Lake Central HS) recorded a team-high six blocks.
The Wolverines will head north to West Lafaytette, Ind., to face Purdue on Saturday (Oct. 11) to close out their Big Ten road trip. Match time is slated for 8 p.m. EST/CDT at the Intercollegiate Athletic Facility on Purdue's campus.
