ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- On Senior Day at the U-M Soccer Field, senior tri-captain Kevin Taylor (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Preparatory) knocked home two penalty kicks to lead the University of Michigan men's soccer team over the Wisconsin Badgers 4-1 Sunday afternoon (Oct. 19) in front of a crowd of 1,276. Fellow senior tri-captain Mike White (Livonia, Mich./Livonia Stevenson HS) also chipped in with a second-half goal to notch his 52nd career point in the Maize and Blue, while junior Knox Cameron (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman HS) tallied the game-winner with Michigan's second goal of the match.
Wisconsin forward Phil Doeh put the Badgers on the board first six minutes into the game when he converted a side volley inside the six-yard box. After a nice buildup by Wisconsin, the ball popped around in the six-yard box amidst a group of Wolverines and Badgers. Doeh eventually ran under the ball on the left corner of the six-yard box, settled it with his chest and sent a side volley past sophomore goalkeeper Peter Dzubay (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview HS) at the far post.
The Wolverines (11-4, 3-1 Big Ten) pulled even four minutes later when Taylor converted his fifth spot kick of the season. Michigan earned the penalty kick when Mychal Turpin (Pontiac, Mich./University of Detroit JesuitHS) made a run down the left side of the Wisconsin defending third and sent a penetrating cross into the box. As the ball came across the six-yard box a Badger defender committed a hand-ball infraction, resulting in the Michigan penalty kick.
Cameron put the Wolverines on top 2-1 at 16:25 when he beat Wisconsin keeper Eric Hanson low to the left corner. Turpin set up the goal when he sent a through ball from the top of the Wisconsin box to a streaking Cameron, who calmly walked in on Hanson and notched his eighth goal of the season. Sophomore Ryan Sterba (Westlake, Ohio/St. Ignatius HS) was also awarded an assist, his first of the season.
Taylor put the Wolverines up 3-1 with his second PK conversion of the day at 23:30. The penalty resulted from a collision between Hanson and Cameron at the top of the six-yard box. Cameron played a ball into himself and Hanson raced out in an attempt to beat Cameron to the ball, but instead of getting the ball he took out the onrushing attacker. Taylor calmly stepped up to the penalty spot and buried his second penalty kick of the day.
In the remaining 20 minutes of the first half, the Wolverines dominated possession and kept the Badger offense at bay. Taylor resumed his role as the leader of the defense as he directed the Wolverines and dominated the ball in the air. The Badgers managed eight shots in the first half while the Wolverines put 11 shots on the Badger net.
The Wolverines stretched their lead to 4-1 when White calmly nodded home a header goal only five minutes into the second half. Turpin set the scoring opportunity as he sent a cross from the right side of the Wisconsin baseline to an open White on the far post. Junior Jeff Mirmelstein (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence Central HS) also picked up an assist on the play.
Following the early second-half goal, the play slowed down as both teams settled in to a midfield battle. Neither team was able to gain the upper hand as the scoring chances were few and far between. Late in the second half the Badgers peppered the Michigan goal mouth as sophomore Adam Bruh (Roslyn Heights, N.Y./Wheatley HS) and senior Kevin Robinson (Caro, Mich./Faith Baptist HS) each cleared Badger shots off the Michigan goal line.
Michigan takes to the road next week as the Wolverines head to Akron, Ohio, and State College, Pa., for matches with Akron and Penn State. The Maize and Blue will face Akron at 7:30 p.m. Friday (Oct. 24), then board the bus for a Big Ten matchup with Penn State Sunday afternoon (Oct. 26) at 2 p.m.
