COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The University of Michigan field hockey team suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of 18th-ranked Ohio State on Sunday (Oct. 26) at OSU's North Turf Field. The loss snapped a 10-game winning streak and marked the Wolverines' first lost in Big Ten action since the 2001 campaign, halting an 11-match conference winning streak.
The loss brought Michigan back to the rest of the pack in pursuit of the Big Ten regular-season title, as the Wolverines had a chance to lock up a share of the crown with a win. U-M is now tied with Michigan State and Ohio State for the Big Ten lead, as each school sports a 4-1 mark.
The Buckeyes scored twice in less than five minutes in the second half after being held scoreless in the opening 35 minutes, securing the victory at 47:19 when Vanessa Immordino converted a penalty stroke.
Senior Kristi Gannon (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS) got the Wolverines on the board 1:08 into the game with help from juniors Laura Woitkewitsch (Cologne, Germany/Cologne Rot-Weiss) and Jessica Blake (Perth, Western Australia/St. Mary's Anglican School), capitalizing on an early penalty corner for the Wolverines. U-M held a 1-0 lead heading into halftime, but OSU's Saskia Muller tied the game at 42:40 before Immordino scored the game-winner.
Michigan outshot the Buckyeyes 13-11, including 9-4 in the first half, and took 10 penalty corners to OSU's five. Freshman Beth Riley (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra Area HS) made three saves in the contest and saw her scoreless streak end at 379:09 on Muller's goal. Riley's two goals allowed were the first for the Wolverines in Big Ten play this season.
Michigan will return home to close out the regular season, hosting Penn State on Saturday (Nov. 1). Game time is slated for 1 p.m. at Ocker Field, with Senior Day festivities scheduled before the match. U-M will honor its six graduating seniors -- April Fronzoni (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West HS), Kristi Gannon (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS), Stephanie Johnson (Houston, Texas/The Kinkaid School), Anneke Huntzicker (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS), Woitkewitsch and Jennifer Zangara (Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Hills HS).
