This Week at Ohio State ...
The No. 25-ranked University of Michigan men's soccer team (12-5-0, 4-1-0 Big Ten) concludes its Big Ten Conference and regular-season schedule with a league matchup at Ohio State on Saturday (Nov. 1) in Columbus, Ohio. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Jesse Owens Stadium. Michigan holds a 2-1 advantage in the three-game series, with back-to-back victories in 2001 and 2002.
The Michigan-Ohio State Rivalry ...
Michigan holds a 2-1 advantage in the three-game series as the Wolverines have claimed the last two tilts between the two programs. Michigan earned its first victory of the series with a 1-0 upset win in 2001 in Columbus, Ohio. The Buckeyes came into the matchup as the No. 14 ranked team in the nation, but U-M held them scoreless and Knox Cameron (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman HS) netted the lone goal to for the Wolverines' first-ever victory over a ranked opponent. Michigan made it two straight over the Buckeyes with a 1-0 overtime triumph at the U-M Soccer Field in 2002. Kevin Robinson (Caro, Mich./Faith Baptist HS) tallied the game-winner at 97:53, while Peter Dzubay (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview HS) again kept OSU off the board with three saves.
In Action Last Week ...
The Wolverines split last weekend's road trip with a 2-1 loss at Akron Friday (Oct. 24) and a 4-2 Big Ten Conference victory at Penn State Sunday (Oct. 26). Junior Knox Cameron helped the Maize and Blue to its first-ever defeat of Penn State with his first collegiate hat trick. Cameron's three tallies increased his season total to 11, deadlocking him with Mychal Turpin (Pontiac, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit) for the program's single-season record. Senior tri-captains Kevin Taylor (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) and Mike White (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) netted Michigan's other two goals of the weekend. Taylor found the back of the net for the sixth time this season when he buried a penalty kick for Michigan's second goal in the 4-2 win at Penn State. White's goal came off a header from sophomore Adam Bruh (Roselyn Heights, N.Y./Wheatley HS) to pull the Wolverines even with Akron. In 180 minutes of action, Peter Dzubay earned his 10th win of the season, and he had a school-record-tying 10 saves at Penn State.
Setting New Standards ...
With its first-ever win over Penn State last Sunday (Oct. 26), the Wolverines increased their season win total to 12, surpassing the program's single-season win record of 11 set last year. In 2002 the Maize and Blue finished 11-7-2. Michigan also posted its program-best fourth win in Big Ten Conference play, breaking its old mark of three set during the 2001 and 2002 seasons.
I Love Gooooooooooals ...
Michigan tallied four goals in a 4-2 win over Penn State last Sunday (Oct. 26), it marked the fifth time this season U-M has put up four goals in a game. It those four games, the Wolverines have compiled a record of 5-0, improving their four-year program record to 14-1-1 when netting three or more goals in a game.
Still Kicking at 60 ...
Juniors Knox Cameron and Mychal Turpin surpassed the career 60-point plateau this season, making them the first two players in Michigan men's soccer history to score 60 points in a career. Cameron is currently the Michigan all-time leading scorer with 67 points on a program-record 26 goals and 15 assists, while Turpin sits second on the list with 60 points on 24 goals and 12 assists.
I Can't Drive 55 ...
Michigan's junior tandem of Knox Cameron and Mychal Turpin has combined for 56 points in 2003, as they have produced 31 and 25 points, respectively. Cameron's single-season-record 31 points have come on 11 goals and nine assists, while Turpin's 25 have come from 11 tallies and three helpers.
Put Your Cameras on Cameron ...
Following Knox Cameron's hat trick to lead the Wolverines to a 4-2 win at Penn State, the junior midfielder set the Michigan record for single-season points with 31 in 2003. Cameron has 31 points on 11 goals and nine assists. His 11 tallies also tie Mychal Turpin's 2003 mark for single-season goals. Through 50 games in his career, Cameron has posted a Michigan-record 67 points with a U-M best 26 goals and 15 assists.
Tricks are for Kids ...
Knox Cameron recorded his first collegiate hat trick last Sunday when he found the back of the net three times in Michigan's 4-2 victory at Penn State. It marked the third hat trick this season by the Wolverines. Earlier this season, Mychal Turpin put two four-goal performances together. Michigan has five hat tricks in its four-year varsity history.
Five Out of Six ...
With three goals against Penn State, Knox Cameron has scored at least one point in five of his last six games. Dating back to the Oct. 10 matchup with Western Michigan, Cameron has totaled 17 points with seven goals and three assists.
Gum Would be Perfection ...
Kevin Taylor is now 8-8 in career penalty kick conversions after he made good on a 12-yard kick in helping the Wolverines to their first-ever victory over conference rival Penn State (Oct. 26). The spot-kick tally improves Taylor's season goal total to six, with all six goals coming via the PK. Through 17 matches this season, Taylor has been called upon to convert the spot kick in five games, with goals against Bowling Green (Sept. 28), Evansville (Sept. 7), Michigan State (Oct. 12), Wisconsin (Oct. 19) and Penn State (Oct. 26). As a freshman in 2000 he scored on the penalty kick against Cleveland State (9/5/00) and Detroit (9/17/00). The Wolverines have won all seven matches Taylor has made good on the 12-yard kick.
Michigan and the PK ...
The Wolverines have converted nine of 10 penalty kicks in their four years of varsity status. Kevin Taylor is 8-8 when called upon to convert the 12-yard kick, while junior Knox Cameron is 1-2. Taylor has made penalty kicks in wins over Cleveland State (9/5/00), Detroit (9/17/00), Evansville (9/7/03), Bowling Green (9/28/03), Michigan State (10/12/03), two against Wisconsin (Oct. 19) and at Penn State (Oct. 26). Cameron converted his first career penalty kick against Brown (9/13/02) but had his second career PK blocked against Bowling Green (10/9/02).
Multiples of 12 ...
Senior tri-captain Kevin Taylor doubled his career goal mark last weekend when he netted his sixth goal of the season. Coming into the 2003 season Taylor had six goals -- three as a freshman in 2000 and three as a sophomore in 2001. Through 17 games this season Taylor has six goals, all on the penalty kick, increasing his career goals scored mark to 12.
That's Using Your Head ...
Senior tri-captain Mike White became the third Wolverine in program history to reach the 20-goal mark when he headed home an Adam Bruh corner kick in the 20th minute of Michigan's tilt with Akron last Friday (Oct. 24). White has seven goals and four assists for 18 points this season.
Bruh Yah ...
Sophomore Adam Bruh notched his 20th career assist with a pair corner kick helpers last weekend. Bruh earned assist number 19 with a corner kick service to the head of Mike White at Akron, then recorded his 20th career assist on a corner kick serve to Knox Cameron at Penn State. Bruh is the first Wolverine to reach the 20-assist mark in a career.
The Zoo Keeper ...
Sophomore goalkeeper Peter Dzubay recorded his program-leading 10th win of the season last Sunday at Penn State. In the match Dzubay matched the program's single-game record for saves when he turned away 10 Nittany Lion shots. The mark matched former keeper Bryan Lau's 10-save performance accomplished during Michigan's first-ever postseason victory on Nov. 14, 2001.
I Had An Awesome Time ...
Michigan leads the Big Ten in five of six offense categories in conference-only statistics. Michigan leads the conference in points (44), goals scored (15), goals-per-game (3.00), assists (14), assists (14) and assists-per-game (2.80).
League Leaders ...
Knox Cameron ranks atop nearly every Big Ten Conference offensive category this season. Cameron is the league leader in shots (19), shots per game (3.80), points (13), points per game (2.60), goals (5), goals per game (1.00), assists (3) and game-winning goals (3). Cameron is also second in assist per game (0.60) to teammate Jeff Mirmelstein (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence Academy) (0.67). Peter Dzubay is tied for the league lead in saves (29) and saves per game (5.80).
The Life I Love is Making Music With My Friends ...
For the second consecutive year the Michigan offense is putting up some big numbers. Through Sunday (Oct. 26) the Wolverines have totaled a conference-leading 115 points on with a conference-best 39 goals and 39 assists in 17 games this season. Michigan is the conference leader in goals (39), goals per game (2.29) and assists (39) and assists per game (2.18).
Would You Like To Supersize Your Order ...
Mychal Turpin etched his name in the Big Ten record book Sept. 29 when the junior striker netted his second career four-goal game. It marked the first time in conference history a player had tallied two career four-goal games. What makes it even more special is that Turpin accomplished the feat in just a two-week span. Turpin is one of only five players in league history to net four goals in a game and first since Aaron Lauber did it on November 1, 2001.
Debuting at the Top of the Charts ...
Behind a pair of Big Ten home victories Oct. 17-19, the Maize and Blue made a stunning debut in the NSCAA/adidas Top 25 on Oct. 20, earning a No. 11 national ranking after not even receiving a single vote the previous week.
In the Polls ...
The Wolverines fell 14 spots in the latest NCAA/adidas Coaches' Poll this week following a 1-1 record last weekend. Michigan currently ranks as in a five-way tie for 25th in the nation.

The Book on Burns ...
Head coach Steve Burns' Wolverines improved to 39-29-3 through last Sunday (Oct. 26). Through 17 games this season the Maize and Blue has compiled a program-best 12 wins. Burns' boys have also set a Michigan record with four wins in conference play this season. They have also made their first-ever appearance in the NSCAA/adidas Coaches' Poll, debuting at No. 11 in the weekly poll on Oct. 20. Last season Burns guided the Maize and Blue to a No. 2 seed in the Big Ten Conference Tournament and its first-ever appearance in the championship game. Since Burns took the helm in 2000, the Wolverines have bettered their record in each of his first three years. In the program's inaugural season of 2000, U-M finished with a 6-10 record, while in 2001 his club put together a mark of 10-7-1. Prior to Michigan soccer being granted varsity status on March 26, 1999, Burns was the head coach of the Michigan club team since 1993. Under his leadership, Michigan posted a 121-51-26 mark (.677 winning percentage) and made six consecutive appearances in the national club championship tournament. The team won back-to-back national championships in 1997 and 1998.
On the Horizon ...
Michigan has a week off of competition before it heads to Bloomington, Ind., for the Big Ten Conference Championship hosted by Indiana. The tournament will run Thursday through Sunday (Nov. 13-16) with two games played on Thursday and Friday and the championship game being held Sunday.
