This Week: Florida Dual ...
The University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team continues its 2003-04 season with a Halloween dual with SEC opponent Florida this Friday night (Oct. 31) at 6 p.m. in Canham Natatorium. The dual will be contested in long-course meters.

Michigan vs. Florida ...
This will mark the sixth consecutive year Michigan will face Florida in the pool and the third time the two teams will meet in Michigan's home waters of Canham Natatorium. U-M owns a 4-1 advantage in the series, after a 132-109 victory last year at then No. 6 Florida. Florida's lone victory in the series came in 2000 when the Gators earned a 125.5-117.5 decision in Gainesville.
Scouting the Opponents ...
Florida ... The Gators return 25 letterwinners from their 2003 Southeastern Conference championship team, including 2003 SEC Swimmer of the Year Ryan Lochte. Lochte is also the reigning College Swimming News National Swimmer of the Week with wins in the 200-yard freestyle (1:37.44) and 100-yard backstroke (49.74) at the Florida International last week. The Last Time in the Pool ...
The Wolverines opened the 2003-04 season with a 168-115 victory over Eastern Michigan last Friday (Oct. 24) in the friendly waters of Canham Natatorium. The Maize and Blue won 11 of 15 events, including sophomore Davis Tarwater's (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb School) pair of individual titles in the 100-yard backstroke and 50-yard freestyle. Michigan posted the best marks in 14 of 15 events but exhibitioned three of the final four races.
Not My Event, But That's OK ...
Sophomore Davis Tarwater earned his first two individual event wins of the season last Friday (Oct. 24) when he posted the fastest time in the 100-yard backstroke and 50-yard freestyle. Tarwater touched the wall with a time of 50.65 in the 100 back, 2.3 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher from Eastern Michigan. Tarwater then earned a first-place finish with a clocking of 21.12 in the 50-yard freestyle. He also swam the leadoff leg of the winning 400-yard freestyle relay.
Heeeeeee's Baaaaaaaaaack ...
Senior/junior Christian Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS) returned to the competition pool for the first time since the 2001-02 season and earned the top spot in the 100-yard breaststroke when he touched in 58.10. Vanderkaay missed the entire 2002-03 season due to a shoulder injury.
The Neligan Can ...
Junior Brendan Neligan (Hempstead, N.Y./Archibishop Molloy HS) earned his first two event victories of the season last Friday (Oct. 24) against Eastern Michigan as he posted the fastest times in both the mile and the 200-yard butterfly. Neligan won the mile by 13 seconds as he touched the wall with a time of 15:42.93. He later entered the pool for the 200-yard butterfly and posted a time of 1:53.23.
Walk the Plank ...
Senior diver Dusty Garwood (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Lahser HS) posted his first win of the season on the three-meter springboard last Friday (Oct. 24) when he posted a high score of 253.65.
The Urbanchek File ...
Michigan head coach Jon Urbanchek enters his 22nd year as head coach of the men's swimming and diving program. He has watched eight of his swimmers go on to earn Olympic medals. He led his 1995 team to an NCAA championship, while individually his swimmers and divers have racked up 36 national titles. On the conference level his teams have won 13 Big Ten championships while posting a staggering record of 96-4 in conference dual meets for a winning percentage of .960. His overall dual meet record is similar, as he has led the Wolverines to an impressive 159-31 (.837) mark.
