Civic Lifts Michigan Over No. 18 Louisville in Double OT

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Freshman Jill Civic (Wescosville, Pa./Emmaus HS) scored with 2:24 left in the second overtime to life the No. 6 University of Michigan field hockey team to a 3-2 victory over the 18th-ranked Louisville Cardinals Monday afternoon (Oct. 6) at Trager Stadium. The Wolverines, who extended their winning streak to a season-high five games, have triumphed in nine of their last 10 outings.
Civic's marker capped what was a dominating performance by the Wolverines, who outshot the Cardinals 22-8. U-M had trouble solving Cardinals goalkeeper Christy Hershey, who made 13 saves in the contest, but eventually scored the sudden-victory goal to give Michigan a 5-0 edge in the all-time series with Louisville.
The Wolverines went up 1-0 15:40 into the contest when junior Jessica Blake (Perth, Western Australia/St. Mary's Anglican School) scored after receiving a pass from senior April Fronzoni (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West HS) in front of the net. The assist by Fronzoni gave her 136 career points, tying the school record set by Mary Callam from 1976-79.
Louisville tied the game at 23:10 when Olivia Netzler scored the first of two goals in the game, converting one of the Cardinals' 11 penalty corners to even the score before the half.
Michigan came out and regained the lead 1:44 into the second half when senior Stephanie Johnson (Houston, Texas/The Kinkaid School) fired a shot past Hershey, taking a pass from junior Adrienne Hortillosa (Chula Vista, Calif./Bonita Vista HS) on a broken penalty corner, one of U-M's 18 penalty corner attempts in the match.
The Cardinals received some heroics from Netzler late in the second half to force overtime when she tipped in a shot from Lisa Wasser on a penalty corner at 57:48.
Michigan turned on the pressure late in regulation, receiving a penalty corner and recording three shots on goal which all stopped by Hershey. In the first overtime, U-M outshot Louisville 4-0 with one shot on net, while in the second overtime, the Cardinals got two shots through to freshman goalkeeper Beth Riley (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra Area HS), her only two saves in the game, before Civic ended the contest with a shot from in front of the goal.
The Wolverines will return home for their next match, hosting the No. 20 Indiana Hoosiers on Saturday (Oct. 11) at Ocker Field. Game time is slated for 1 p.m.

On the match ... "It was an exciting match, that's for sure. Their goalkeeper (Christy Hershey) played well, considering we had an awful lot of chances. The match went into double overtime and the girls ran a lot, but they showed a lot of heart and dug deep to pull off the win, which wasn't easy."
