ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan men's track and field head coach Ron Warhurst announced today (Thursday, Nov. 20) the signing of Andrew Wechter (Shelby, Ohio/Shelby HS) to a National Letter of Intent during the early signing period (Nov. 12-19).
"Drew will be a great addition to our program," said Warhurst. "He is a very strong sprinter who is capable of doing damage in more than one event. Along with the guys we picked up last year, we expect to be very strong in the sprints for years to come."
Competing in three events at the 2003 Ohio state track and field championships, Wechter helped lead Shelby High School to the team title. He placed second in the 400-meter run, clocking a time of 48.01, and ran anchor in the 4x400 relay, which set a new state meet record of 3:18.33. Wechter has also excelled in the classroom, earning a 4.25 GPA. He plans to pursue a degree in pharmacy at Michigan.
"I am very happy and excited to go to such a great school like the University of Michigan," said Wechter. "I am looking forward to having success in both athletics and academics."
