SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The No. 12-seeded University of Michigan men's soccer team advanced to the College Cup Elite Eight Sunday afternoon (Nov. 30), as the Wolverines defeated No. 3-ranked and No. 5-seeded Notre Dame 4-3 in penalty kicks on Alumni Field. With the victory U-M will travel to Santa Clara, Calif., to face No. 9-ranked Santa Clara, a 3-2 overtime winner over Coastal Carolina, next Saturday (Dec. 6) at 7 p.m. PST in Buck Shaw Stadium.
| White came through twice to put U-M in the quarterfinals. |
Following 110 minutes of tied soccer (1-1), the match went to penalty kicks. Notre Dame was the first to attempt as Filippo Chillemi converted for a 1-0 advantage. Senior tri-captain Kevin Taylor (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) was first up for the Wolverines and, like his previous six chances this season, made good on the spot kick.
Following a make by Chad Riley, sophomore Adam Bruh (Roselyn Hights, N.Y./Wheatley HS) converted and the PKs were knotted at 2-2. Greg Martin made what would be the third and final PK for the Irish, followed by a make by freshman Brian Popeney (Canton, Mich./Plymouth Salem HS).
Dzubay made the first of two consecutive stops when he turned away Devon Prescod, but Michigan could not take advantage as sophomore/freshman Michael O'Reilly (Spring, Texas/Klein HS) lofted his shot over the top of the crossbar, keeping the PK score at 3-3. Dzubay returned to the goal mouth for a final time to face Justin Detter, who scored the Irish's lone goal of the match, and turned away the Notre Dame forward with a diving save to his right, setting the stage for White.
As the fifth shooter for Michigan, White set the ball 12 yards from the net and fired a shot right up the middle into the back netting and sent the Maize and Blue to the NCAA College Cup Elite Eight in the program's first NCAA appearance.
Michigan dominated the first 15 minutes of action as Michigan earned its first scoring chance 9:15 into the game. U-M nearly took a 1-0 advantage when White dribbled between two Notre Dame defenders and blasted a 25-yarder that caught the Irish keeper off his line, but the ball bounced off the right post. The ball was still in play though as Trai Blanks (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) was able to gather it. As Blanks attempted the rebound shot, Kevin Richards stepped in front and blocked it free.
Notre Dame jumped ahead 1-0 at 16:57 of the first half as Detter scored on an empty-netter from the right wing. Following a Greg Martin through ball that traveled just out the Michigan penalty area, Dzubay came racing out to corral the ball, but Detter beat the Michigan keeper to the ball and pulled it down to the right side where he was able to send it across the field and into the side netting of the U-M goal for an early 1-0 Irish lead.
It only took Michigan 3:14 to answer the call as White netted his ninth goal of the season to pull U-M even 1-1 at 20:11 of the first half. Freshman Kevin Savitskie (Plymouth, Mich./Salem HS) started the play as he sent a lofted ball into the box, where sophomore Chris Glinski (Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS) was able to head the ball down to a charging White. Gathering the ball without breaking stride, White buried the ball to the back of the net, beating the Irish keeper to his lower right.
Notre Dame carried much of the play in the final two minutes of play, as the Irish earned a pair of corner kicks, including one in the final 25 seconds of the half, which Dzubay punched free.
Through 45 minutes of action Michigan and Notre Dame each attempted eight shots with three shots on goal. Dzubay had two saves while his goalkeeper counterpart, Chris Sawyer, turned away a pair of Michigan scoring chances.
In the second stanza Michigan was only able to muster one shot, while Notre Dame attempted nine shots, five of which were on target and turned away by Dzubay. Dzubay was forced to come up on a few occasions as he went vertical for stops against Detter and Kevin Goldthwaite in the final 45 minutes of regulation.
Notre Dame carried most of the play in the first 10-minute overtime period, but Michigan had a quality chance to earn the game-winner midway through, as Mychal Turpin (Pontiac, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit HS) found the ball inside the Irish penalty area with White on his left side. Unfortunately for Michigan, Turpin's shot attempt went wide of the net, resulting in a Notre Dame goal kick.
In the second overtime period, Notre Dame had two early chances, but Michigan earned a corner kick with 5:45 remaining. Bruh sent the ball across the goal box, where Taylor headed it to the goal line and Turpin headed to the goal, forcing the Irish keeper to make a diving stop.
With just over one minute remaining in the second extra frame, Notre Dame had four shots inside the Michigan box. Dzubay made the initial save, but the ball bounced out and was buried under Irish and Wolverine players. As the ball came free Martin blasted a shot that sophomore Ryan Sterba (Westlake, Ohio/St. Ignatius HS) blocked. Sterba blocked his second consecutive shot seconds later, followed by a wide shot by Ian Etherington.
