Ketchum Wins Two But Michigan Drops Dual at Georgia

ATHENS, Ga. -- The No. 7 University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team dropped its second consecutive dual meet to a Southeastern Conference opponent in as many days, as the Wolverines lost 133-110 at No. 10 Georgia Saturday afternoon (Nov. 8) in a short-course meters matchup at Gabrielsen Natatorium.
Senior captain Dan Ketchum (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore HS) led the Michigan charge with a pair of individual mid-distance freestyle victories, while junior Andrew Hurd (Oakville, Ontario/Trafalger HS) and sophomores Chris DeJong (Holland, Mich./Holland HS), Davis Tarwater (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb School HS) and Peter Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS) also turned in first-place finishes.
Vanderkaay was the first Wolverine to earn an event title when he posted an NCAA consideration time of 15:06.54 in the 1,500-meter freestyle. The sophomore's time bettered the NCAA B standard of 15:30.25 by nearly 24 seconds. Vanderkaay was just 3.37 seconds shy of the NCAA automatic qualifying standard of 15:03.17.
In the ensuing event, Ketchum earned the first of his two victories with an NCAA consideration clocking of 1:49.90 in the 200-meter freestyle. It marked his first NCAA consideration time of the weekend in the event. In a long-course meters head-to-head with No. 1 Auburn Friday night (Nov. 7), Ketchum posted a time of 1:52.99.
Hurd finished second in the event when he posted his first NCAA consideration time of the season, clocking in at 1:50.55.
The Wolverines later strung together four straight event victories as Tarwater got things started with a first-place showing in the 200-meter butterfly. The sophomore posted the fastest time in the event when he touched the wall with an NCAA consideration time of 1:59.47. It marks Tarwater's first NCAA B standard performance of the season.
Ketchum then earned his second event title of the afternoon as he posted his second NCAA consideration clocking of the meet, touching the wall in 49.96 to win the 100-meter freestyle.
DeJong was the next Wolverine to earn a first-place finish, posting a NCAA B standard time of 1:58.60 to win the 200-meter backstroke. Hurd then completed the Michigan's four straight wins with a victory in the 400-meter freestyle in 3:56.83. Vanderkaay was the second swimmer into the wall, posting a time of 3:56.85.
The Wolverines finished the meet with a first-place finish in the 400-meter freestyle relay as the foursome of Hurd, DeJong, Mike Porth (Detroit, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit HS) and Vanderkaay combined for a time of 3:21.14.
Michigan (2-2, 0-0 Big Ten) returns to action next week when it welcomes defending Big 12 Conference champion and current No. 3-ranked Texas to Canham Natatorium Friday and Saturday (Nov. 14-15). The Wolverines and Longhorns take to the water at 6 p.m. Friday evening and return to the pool for a 1 p.m. tilt on Saturday.
