ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan women's rowing head coach Mark Rothstein announced that the program will welcome recruits Karen Colwell (Pawcatuck, Conn./Centennial HS) and Marin McCabe (Champaign, Ill./Stonington HS) to the team for the 2004-05 season. The pair inked National Letters of Intent during the early signing period.
Colwell is a native of Pawcatuck, Conn., and attends Centennial High School. She attended the 2003 Junior National Selection Camp and won a gold medal in the junior pair event at the 2003 USRowing National Championships. At the 2003 World Indoor Rowing Championships she finished 20th in the Junior event.
"(Associate head coach) Emily Ford met Karen while coaching at the Junior National Team Camp," said Rothstein. "We feel that she will be a strong contributor for us next year. She is athletic, hard working, and an excellent student; most importantly, she is a quality person. We are excited to have Karen become a part of our team."
McCabe, who hails from Champaign, Ill., is a solid all-around athlete who grabbed coaches' attention at Michigan's summer rowing camp in 2003. She attends Stonington High School.
"We are really excited about Marin," said Rothstein. "She is a very good athlete with a natural ability for the sport of rowing. She has very little rowing experience, but she has already demonstrated ability. Marin is an excellent student and a really impressive young woman."
After wrapping up their fall schedule, the Wolverines are going through their winter training until they open the 2004 spring season against Notre Dame on March 27 on Belleville Lake. Michigan will lose six seniors from its roster following the 2004 season.
