Wolverines Finish Fourth at Sykes-Sabok Challenge Cup

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team moved up one place this afternoon (Saturday, Feb. 15) on the final day competition to finish in fourth place in the Sykes/Sabok Challenge Cup at Penn State's Ashenfelter Track. The Wolverines accumulated 80 points, while meet champion Ohio State totaled 136 points.

With a result of 8:12.49, Hesselink posted a four-second win over the rest of the field for his first win of the season in just his first 3,000-meter race this year. Senior transfer Alex L'Heureux (Weedon, Quebec/Palm Beach Gardens HS, Fla.) and redshirt junior Nick Stanko (Wyandotte, Mich./Roosevelt HS) placed fourth and fifth, respectively, with season-best times.
Ellerton's victory in the 600-meter run came with the Wolverines' fastest time in the event this season, clocked at 1:19.11. Ellerton held a slight 0.23 advantage of Penn State's Michael Jordan in second place. Finishing in third place, sophomore Seth Waits (Grand Rapids, Ohio/Otsego HS) posted a career-best result (1:19.78) and surpassed U-M's prior fastest time. Redshirt freshman Kaj Johansson (Honor, Mich./Benzie Central HS) was sixth with a personal-record time of 1:20.84.
The 800-meter run proved to be a close race, with Willis finishing just 0.02 seconds behind the Nittany Lions' Matt Lincoln. Willis time of 1:50.29 stands as the Maize and Blue's second fastest result this season and was just 0.29 off NCAA provisional pace. Finishing sixth and eighth overall, redshirt junior Dan Cooke (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney HS) and redshirt freshman Rondell Ruff (Detroit, Mich./Henry Ford HS) ran season bests in the race.
Members of the Wolverine sprint corps showed strong improvement as junior Chris Yee (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) posted season bests in both the 200- and 400-meter dashes (22.81 and 49.86). Additionally, redshirt junior David Battani (Fraser, Mich./Fraser HS) had a season-best 200-meter result, while redshirt junior Brent Cummings (Belding, Mich./Belding HS) competed in the 200 for the first time.
In the field, freshman pole vaulter Spencer Dowdall (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Springs HS) had a season-best mark of 15-3.
The Wolverines will host their final home meet of the indoor season with the Harold Silverston Invitational on Saturday (Feb. 22). Field events are scheduled for a 9:30 a.m. start, while track competition is set to begin at noon at the U-M Track Building. Slated to compete at the meet are squads from Calvin College, Detroit, Eastern Michigan, Hillsdale, Toledo, Waterloo, Western Michigan and Windsor.
