Michigan Blanks Butler for Second Straight Home Shutout

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team defeated Butler 7-0 Saturday afternoon (Feb. 22) at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Wolverines (5-4) won two of three in doubles and swept all six singles matches to seal the win.

The Maize and Blue carried the momentum into singles action as sophomore David Anving (Tvaaker, Sweden/Varbergs Gymnasieskola) defeated Weaver in straight sets (6-2, 6-1) at No. 4 to give U-M its second point of the day. Gossain soon followed with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph over Bartish at No. 6. Jackson clinched the match for the Wolverines with an identical 6-2, 6-3 victory over Brandon Gill at No. 2.
Michigan closed out the victory by winning the final three matches in super-tiebreakers. Fischer outlasted Newmark at No. 5, 7-5, 3-6, 1-0(5). Sophomore Michael Rubin (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic HS) picked up his seventh win of the dual match season, defeating Kevin Gill 6-3, 3-6, 1-0(6) at No. 1. Shaya completed the sweep for Michigan and earned his first dual match victory of the season, posting a 3-6, 7-6(3), 1-0(8) win over Voelz at No. 3.
Following a spring break trip to San Diego, the Wolverines return to the hardcourt on Thursday, March 6, when they face Notre Dame at 3 p.m. in South Bend, Ind.
