SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team earned six individual event victories and automatically qualified its distance medley relay team for the NCAA Championships at the two-day, non-scoring Meyo Invitational on Friday and Saturday (Feb. 7-8) in Notre Dame's Loftus Sports Complex. Senior tri-captain April Phillips (Fraser, Mich./Fraser HS) led the Wolverines' attack with a pair of throwing titles.
| | Gallo helped Michigan's distance medley relay team to an NCAA automatic time and took first place in the mile. |
Phillips won her first of two event titles with a season-best throw of 60-3 1/4 in the weight throw on Friday, topping the field by nearly five feet. Runner-up Kristi Ford of Western Michigan marked 55-6 1/4. Phillips' toss bettered her previous season-best distance of 57-9 set two weeks ago at the Red Simmons Invitational (Jan. 26). It marked the second time this season Phillips had the longest throw in the event.
Phillips returned to the infield Saturday afternoon and claimed her second event title of the meet with an NCAA provisional and season-best heave of 51-4 1/2. Phillips remained undefeated in the event this year with shot put wins in all five meets this season. Phillips' previous season-best distance was 51-0 1/4.
U-M middle-distance runners Erdman and Gallo each crossed the finish line with NCAA provisional qualifying times with wins in the 800-meter and mile run, respectively.
Erdman, who ran the opening leg of the distance medley relay, paced a 1-2 Wolverine finish in the 800 meters as she clocked in with an NCAA provisional time of 2:08.04. Following Erdman across the finish line was sophomore Theresa Feldkamp (Lorain, Ohio/Amherst Steele HS), who also provisionally qualifyied for the NCAA Championships with a time of 2:08.32.
In the mile Gallo ran a personal-best 4:44.52 for the event victory and an NCAA provisional qualifying mark. Gallo's previous best time in the mile was 5:04.69 set two years ago at the Michigan Intercollegiate (1/27/01).
In addition to Erdman and Gallo winning individual titles, fellow distance medley relay member Simms won a single race with a time of 1:14.84 in the 500-meter run.
Senior/junior Robin Landfair (Okemos, Mich./Okemos HS) gave Michigan its final event title with a victory in the 60-meter hurdles, clocking in with a personal-best time of 8.51. Landfair's time was only 0.10 seconds off Tania Longe's Michigan record in the event (8.41) set in 1998.
The Wolverines will stay on the road next weekend when they travel to Penn State University's Ashenfelter Indoor Track for the two-day, non-scoring Sykes-Sabok Challenge Cup in State College, Pa. Field events start things off at 5:30 p.m. on Friday (Feb. 14) and 10 a.m. on Saturday (Feb. 15).
