AUSTIN, Texas -- Behind a pair of third-place finishes by junior Dan Ketchum (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore HS) in the 200-yard freestyle and the 800-yard freestyle relay squad, the University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team moved up two spots to ninth place Friday night (March 28) at the NCAA Championships as the Wolverines compiled 63 points for a two-day total of 105 points. Auburn continues to lead at the national meet, scoring 243 points to boost their overall score to 449 at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.
As the only Wolverine in an individual event "A" final on the second day of action, Ketchum put the Maize and Blue back on track when he completed the 200-yard freestyle in 1:34.52 for third place in the event. Ketchum, the top seed heading into the night final, battled Texas' Chris Kemp the entire race as the two swam in the middle of the pool. Unfortunately for the two, who battled back and forth, Arizona's Simon Burnett got loose in lane eight and took off during the second 100 yards.
As Ketchum and Kemp went stroke for stroke down the stretch, Burnett jumped into the lead undetected on the outside of the pool and claimed the NCAA title in the 200-yard freestyle with a winning time of 1:33.69, 0.66 seconds off Matt Biondi's NCAA-, American- and U.S. Open-record time of 1:33.03 set in 1987.
After the first 50 yards of the race Ketchum was in sixth, but he quickly made up ground on the field as he touched the wall in 46.50 over 100 yards. At the 150-yard split the junior posted a time of 1:10.87 for third place, his finishing position, as he was unable to get past Kemp and Burnett even though he finished with season-best time of 1:34.52.
Freshman Peter Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS) earned the Wolverines six points when he finished 11th in the consolation final of the 200-yard free. The freshman earned All-America Honorable Mention as he posted a personal-best time of 1:35.74.
In the 400-yard individual medley, sophomore Chuck Sayao (Mississauga, Ontario/Cawthra Park HS) finished sixth in the consolation final when crossed the line with a time of 1:50.35. The 14th-place overall finish in the race earned him All-America Honorable Mention and an additional three points for the Wolverines.
In the Skippy Browning Diving Facility, junior Jason Coben (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown HS) earned All-America Honorable Mention by finishing 11th on the three-meter springboard with an 11-dive total of 521.60. It marked his second All-America citation of the championships as he finished 14th on the one-meter springboard Thursday night.
In the final event of the evening, with Michigan sitting in 11th place with 73 points, the freshman threesome of Vanderkaay, Davis Tarwater (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb School) and Tyler DeBerry (Tucson, Ariz./Sabino HS) teamed with Ketchum to finish third in the 800 freestyle relay with a school-record time of 6:20.78. Their time lowered the previous Michigan mark of 6:20.89 set in 1996 by Chris Rumley, Jason Lancaster, John Piersma and Tom Dolan.
Vanderkaay got things started as he touched after completed his 200-yard leadoff leg in 1:35.80. As Tarwater jumped in the pool Michigan was in fourth place, but when he was done the Wolveirnes had caught the three leaders -- Texas, Florida and Auburn. DeBerry also kept things close with Auburn, but Florida and Texas were able to gain some open water on the rest of the field. Ketchum made a huge push on the leaders during his anchor leg of the race as he passed the Auburn swimmer and nearly caught Florida's anchor, touching the wall in the school-record time of 6:20.78. Ketchum's anchor leg swim was timed at 1:33.78.
The Maize and Blue concludes its NCAA Championships action Saturday (March 30). The final day's preliminary events will begin at 11 a.m. CST, with finals scheduled to start at 7 p.m.

Head Coach Jon Urbanchek
On the team's performance ... "Our goal coming into tonight was to get back into the top 10. We were able to do that. We were hoping to do a little better, but I will definitely settle for a school record and a pair of third places."
On the 800-yard freestyle relay ... "With the amount of inexperience we had on this relay -- three freshmen and Dan (Ketchum) -- we are looking very good for the future. We did as well as we could have on this relay."
On what the Wolverines have to do tomorrow ... "Realistically we can move up one or two spots, but talking isn't doing."
On the 200-yard freestyle ... "That was great race. Dan (Ketchum) and Chris Kemp from Texas battled all the way, they just couldn't see the guy on the outside. It's what we call 'outside smoke.' He set himself up in great shape by cruising into the final, it played to his advantage. He is a second semester enrollee from Great Britain and we didn't know anything about him."
