Michigan Finishes Fourth at NCAAs for Third Straight Year

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Led by top-eight all-around finishes from senior Scott Vetere (Pennsburg, Pa./Quakertown HS) and freshman Justin Laury (Marietta, Ga./McEachern HS), the University of Michigan men's gymnastics team placed fourth at the NCAA Championships Team and All-Around Finals on Saturday (April 12) at Temple's Liacouras Center.

Parzuchowski earned a spot in the event finals with a tie for eighth on the still rings.
U-M, which finished fourth for the third straight year, logged its second-best score of the season (217.850) to finish behind repeat champion Oklahoma (222.600), Ohio State (220.700) and Big Ten champion Penn State (219.850). Vetere captured third place in the all-around (54.625) while Laury took seventh (53.675).
Advancing to Sunday's Individual Event Finals with top-eight finishes Saturday were Vetere on the pommel horse, freshman Andrew DiGiore (Buffalo, N.Y./City Honors School) on vault, and senior Conan Parzuchowski (Northville, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit HS) on the still rings. Sunday's action will start at 2 p.m.
U-M began the night on the vault, and the Wolverines were led by DiGiore, who scored a 9.475 and finished in a tie for third in the event. The Wolverines also received strong efforts on the vault from Laury and sophomore Eddie Umphrey (Albuquerque, N.M./LaCueva HS), who finished with scores of 9.175.
Leading the way for the Wolverines on the parallel bars were seniors Kris Zimmerman (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier HS) and Vetere, who both posted scores of 9.000. Zimmerman and Vetere helped the Maize and Blue in posting its second-best bars score of the season (35.500).
U-M was led on the horizontal bar by Laury, who posted the team's best score for the event (9.200). Michigan also received a strong performance on the event from freshman Gerry Signorelli (Colorado Springs, Colo./Mitchell HS), who posted a score of 9.075.
Vetere and Signorelli tied for the Wolverines' best performance on the floor exercise (8.900). Senior Jamie Hertza (West Bloomfield, Mich./West Bloomfield HS) turned in a solid performance on the floor for the Wolverines as well (8.800).

The Wolverines took charge on pommel horse by posting their highest score of the season for the event (37.250). For the second straight night on pommel horse the Wolverines were led by Vetere (9.550), and they also received strong efforts from seniors Jamie Hertza and Brian Peterson (Albuquerque, N.M./ Eldorado HS), who both finished with a score of 9.350.

Michigan received a strong performance on the still rings from Parzuchowski, who finished tied for eighth for the event (9.450) and qualified for Sunday's event finals. Vetere turned in the Maize and Blue's second-best performance for the event (9.425).
Tonight's meet will be televised on ESPN on Monday, April 14 (3:30-5 p.m.).
