PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- The first varsity eight of the fifth-ranked University of Michigan women's rowing team has been named the Big Ten Conference co-Boat of the Week along with Michigan State's first varsity eight. The Wolverines swept a pair of races at the Big Ten Invitational (April 19) against Indiana and No. 11 Ohio State to earn the laurel. U-M's boat has received the Big Ten honor for three straight weeks, winning it solo April 7 and splitting the award with Ohio State last week (April 14).
In East Lansing, Mich., the Maize and Blue first eight notched two exemplary efforts vs. the Hoosiers and Buckeyes on Lake Ovid in Sleepy Hollow State Park. In the morning session, Michigan clocked a 6:44.92 to defeat the Hoosiers (6:59.03). Later, U-M met OSU in a race featuring the reigning Big Ten co-Boats of the Week. The Wolverines utilized a strong effort en route to an open-water victory over Ohio State, 6:26.59 to 6:35.91.
The first varsity eight boat (from stern to bow) was made up by coxwain Helen Dalis (Augusta, Ga./Davidson Fine Arts), Erin Kopicki (Dearborn, Mich./Divine Child HS), Crystal Culp (Fonthill, Ontario/E.L. Crossley SS), Stesha Carl (Long Beach, Calif./Wilson HS), Heather Mandoli (Kelowna, B.C./KLO SS), Leah Ketcheson (Belleville, Ontario/Bayside SS), Brett Sickler (Los Gatos, Calif./Los Gatos HS), Kate Maxim (St. Helena, S.C./Langley HS) and Katie Reynolds (Saint John, N.B./Saint John SS).
This marks the first time that Michigan has earned three straight Big Ten Boat of the Week honors.
Michigan will attempt to prolong its strong rowing performances in two weeks (May 3) when it travels to Columbus, Ohio, for the Big Ten Championships. After winning the conference championship in the first two years of Big Ten rowing (2000 and 2001), Michigan looks to regain top honors following Ohio State's championship in 2002.
