COLUMBUS, Ohio -- University of Michigan women's track and field senior tri-captain April Phillips (Fraser, Mich./Fraser HS) reset her second school record in as many weeks when she marked an NCAA Regional qualifying distance of 194-9 in the hammer throw Friday (May 2) on the first day of the Jesse Owens Classic. Phillips returned to the circle on Saturday (May 3) and added a first-place finish in the shot put with an NCAA Regional qualifying toss of 52-8.
After setting the school mark in the shot put last week at the Drake Relays (April 26) with a throw of 53-11 1/4, Phillips bettered her distance in the hammer throw by a foot when she sent the ball and chain 194-9. She previously set the record at the 2002 Big Ten Conference Championships when she earned second team all-conference honors with a toss of 193-9.
Phillips has now set four Michigan throwing records during the 2003 season. During the indoor season, she set the school mark in the shot put at 55-0 while at the NCAA Indoor Championships (March 15). She also etched her name in the Michigan record book with a heave of 63-1 1/4 in the weight throw at the Sykes-Sabok Challenge Cup (Feb. 15).
The Wolverines added an additional eight NCAA Regional qualifying marks during the two days of competition in the Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Sierra Hauser-Price (Van Nuys, Calif./Notre Dame HS) posted one of those times when she clocked in with a personal-best time of 11.51 to win the invitational 100-meter dash Saturday afternoon.
Vera Simms (Mililani, Hawaii/Mililani HS) clocked in with two regional qualifying times in the 400-meter hurdles, winning the collegiate and open event Friday with a time of 59.66 and placing third in the invitational portion with a 1:00.58 clocking Saturday.
Melissa Bickett (Akron, Ohio/Revere HS) led the Wolverines with three NCAA Regional qualifying marks, earning a spot in the regional meet in the discus, hammer throw and shot put. In her signature event, the discus, she placed fourth with a distance of 161-9. Bickett set a personal best in the hammer throw when she sent the ball and chain 180-0 for seventh, and she placed seventh in the shot put with a throw of 46-10 1/4.
Carly Knazze (Southfield, Mich./Southfield HS) also posted two NCAA Regional qualifying performances. Knazze qualified for the regional meet on Friday when she finished runner-up in the 400-meter dash with a time of 54.81. She then returned to the track on Saturday and placed fourth in the invitational 200-meter dash, clocking in at 23.99.
Earning two NCAA Regional qualifying times in the 100-meter hurdles was Robin Landfair (Okemos, Mich./Okemos HS). Landfair turned in a runner-up showing in the collegiate and open 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.87 Friday evening, then finished sixth in the invitational event on Saturday with the same time.
The Wolverines host their first and only outdoor meet of the season next Friday and Saturday (May 9-10), as they welcome teams from around Michigan and Ohio to Ferry Field for the Len Paddock Invitational. Field events kick off both days with competition beginning at 11 a.m., and running events begin at 6:30 p.m. Friday and 12:30 p.m. Saturday. Admission is free.
