Grieco Named To Verizon Academic All-America Third Team

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan senior Janessa Grieco (Mahopac, N.Y./Carmel HS), a member of the women's gymnastics team, has been named to the 2003 Verizon Academic All-America University Division Women's At-Large third team, it was announced today (Thursday, June 12). With her selection, Grieco becomes the fourth gymnast to earn a spot on the Academic All-America team in the 28-year history of the program.

A 2003 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipient and the U-M Big Ten Medal of Honor recipient, Grieco is a three-time All-American and was the 2000 Big Ten Conference Freshman of the Year. The 2003 Big Ten balance beam champion, Grieco captained this year's team to the Big Ten title and a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Championship. To earn a spot on the Academic All-America ballot, Grieco was selected to the Verizon All-District IV first team, becoming just the fifth U-M gymnast in school history to receive academic all-district honors.

To be nominated for Verizon Academic All-America honors, student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve and carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher. Nominated student-athletes are then selected by a vote of the members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) within their respective district. First team all-district selections appear on the national ballot for the Verizon Academic All-America Women's At-Large team.
