ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan rower Leah Ketcheson (Belleville, Ontario/Bayside SS) has been named to the Canadian Under-23 National Team. Ketcheson, who recently completed her sophomore season at U-M, will be competing in the 2003 World Under-23 Championships July 24-27 in Belgrade, Yugoslavia.

In order to gain her status on the Canadian Under-23 Team, Ketcheson began her tryout during pairs racing at the Canadian Speed Orders in mid-June in London, Ontario. Ketcheson and her partner finished first in the 2,000-meter sprints and were one of the three pairs that were invited back to participate in further competition.
Those six individuals then competed against each other again for spots in the coxless four on the Canadian Under-23 squad. Following three sets of 1,500-meter sprints with different seat combinations in each trial, Ketcheson was selected as one of the four athletes that would compose the Canadian women's four.
Ketcheson has been very successful in her first two years at U-M. As a freshman, she rowed in the first varsity eight and was named the Big Ten Conference Freshman of the Year, as well as being a member of the Collegiate Rowing Coaches' Association All-Central Region second team. During her second campaign for the Maize and Blue, Ketcheson continued to compete in the first eight and helped Michigan win the 2003 Big Ten Conference championship and secure a school-best second-place finish for the IV8 at the 2003 NCAA Championships.
