DaCosta Reaches Semis at ITA Summer Championships

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Junior Michelle DaCosta (Huber Heights, Ohio/Wayne HS) of the University of Michigan women's tennis team upset top-seeded Kendra Strohm of Texas (6-1, 6-3) to advance to the semifinal round at the 2003 ITA National Summer Championships before being eliminated herself with a loss to Vanderbilt's Amanda Fish in the tiebreaker (1-6, 7-6 (6-10)) on Tuesday (Aug. 12).

 

DaCosta

DaCosta, who was the Wolverines' top singles player last season, earned a quick 6-2, 6-3 victory over Indiana's Martina Grimm in the second round. She split sets with Wisconsin's Katie McGaffigan in the third round, winning the first 6-4 but falling 6-7 in the second. DaCosta, who was seeded 5-8 in the tournament, rallied in the super tiebreaker, winning 10-4 to advance into the semifinals.

Sponsored by the U.S. Tennis Association, the ITA National Summer Championships are the finale of the ITA Collegiate Summer Circuit, which features 20 qualifying dates played at regional sites throughout the month of July.
