FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- The No. 17-ranked University of Michigan women's soccer team began its 2003 campaign with a 4-1 exhibition loss to No. 2 North Carolina Friday night (Aug. 22) at the 2003 Soccer Showcase hosted by Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne. The Tar Heels struck early in each half to put the game out of reach for U-M.
The Wolverines scored their lone goal of the game off a corner kick in the first half. Sophomore Therese Heaton (Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South HS) headed the kick off of a UNC player, who deflected it into the net to put U-M on the board.
The UNC offense was paced by Plymouth, Mich., native Anne Morrell, who found the net twice against Michigan. Alyssa Ramsey and Mary McDowell also added goals for the Tar Heels.
Michigan opens the regular season next Friday (Aug. 29) against No. 24 Brigham Young in Provo, Utah. The match is scheduled for 7 p.m. MDT at South Field.

On the game ... "The score was not indicative of our play. All of North Carolina's goals were well thought-out and two of them came quickly at the beginning of each half. We had a fair amount of opportunities throughout the game. I think we played well for our first scrimmage of the season."
