SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team opened its 2003 campaign with a 1-1 tie in exhibition action against 12th-ranked University of Notre Dame Monday night (Aug. 25) at Alumni Field. Junior Mychal Turpin (Pontiac, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit HS) tallied the Wolverines' lone goal to pull the game even at the 47-minute mark, while senior/junior Joe Zawacki (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) kept the Fighting Irish off the board in the second half to secure the 1-1 tie in U-M's only preseason match of the season.
In front of 1,538 fans, the home Irish took a 1-0 lead at 20:34 when Devon Prescod lofted a shot over sophomore goalkeeper Peter Dzubay's (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview HS) outstretched fingers. Greg Martin and Jack Stewart were credited with assists on the play.
Coming out of halftime, Turpin, wearing jersey No. 15, took it upon himself to get the equalizing goal. Forty-one seconds into to the second stanza, the junior forward carried the ball into the Notre Dame box and fired from the right wing. Irish keeper Chris Sawyer was up to the challenge though and safely gobbled up the shot.
Sawyer was not as successful 1:19 later as Turpin again found open space in the box. Following a pass from freshman Kevin Hall (Kalamazoo, Mich./Portage Central HS), Turpin sent a low line drive to the left corner of the net for the final goal of the evening. Freshman Bobby Trybula (Loveland, Ohio/Archbishop Moeller HS) also received an assist on the goal.
The Wolverines open regular-season play next week (Aug. 31-Sept 1) when they travel to East Lansing, Mich., for the Michigan State Invitational on Old College Field. Michigan will kick off the season Sunday (Aug. 31) at 2:30 p.m. against No. 22 Loyola Marymount. The Wolverines follow up with a Monday afternoon affair with Xavier at 2:30 p.m. It marks the first time Michigan will face either team.

QUOTES
Michigan Head Coach Steve Burns
On the game ... "It was a tale of two halves. They outworked us in the first half and we came out of halftime and outworked them in the second half. I think our guys found out that you have to earn you chances out here on the game field. Opportunities will not always be placed in front of you."
On Mychal Turpin ... "Mychal Turpin was our 'man of the match' tonight. Mychal was dangerous right out of the gate in the second half. He is a handful on the offensive side of the ball and he will play a big role in our season this year. He times his runs so well that he will have many scoring chances this year."
On the freshmen ... "The ones that got in did a good job tonight. Bobby Trybula has a great work ethic and Kevin Hall did a good job playing on the wing in the backfield during the second half of the match."
