MADISON, Wis. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team played in its second double-overtime match of the young 2003 season, tying Nebraska 1-1 Friday afternoon (Sept. 12) in the first game of the Rocky Rococo Wisconsin Invitational at the McClimon Soccer Complex. Senior midfielder Erika Kleinholz (North Ridgeville, Ohio/Elyria Catholic HS) scored U-M's only goal of the game midway through the second half and freshman goalkeeper Megan Tuura (Tucker, Ga./St. Pius X Catholic HS) made a huge save on a penalty kick late in the second extra period to help the Wolverines preserve the tie.
Michigan was unable to generate any offense to start the game, as the Nebraska defense held the Wolverines to just one shot in the first half. The Huskers fared much better on the offensive end, pressuring U-M's defense with eight first-half shots. Tuura and Nebraska goalkeeper Brooke Bredenberg ended the half with one save apiece.
After the break, Nebraska controlled the offensive tempo early on. Seven minutes into the half, the Huskers were awarded a free kick due to a U-M foul. Jenna Cooper's kick was rebounded by Vern Fitzgerald, who was able to put the ball past Tuura for the first goal of the game.
The Wolverines tied the game nearly 12 minutes later, as Kleinholz collected a rebound from a Therese Heaton (Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South HS) shot on the right side and put it out of reach of Bredenberg for her second goal of the season.
The first overtime period saw little action on the offensive end, with the Huskers gettting off three shots while allowing none by the Wolverines. Tuura made one save in the period to prevent Michigan from giving up its fourth straight game, but it was Tuura's save on a Nebraska penalty kick late in the last period that was the difference-maker. Nebraska's defense continued its solid performance late in the game, as Michigan again did not get off a single shot in the second overtime.
Tuura finished the game with six saves, while Bredenberg made two stops. Michigan was outshot in all four periods, with Nebraska totaling 20 shots compared to U-M's six.
The Wolverines (0-3-2) return to the McClimon Soccer Complex on Sunday (Sept. 14) for a meeting with Iowa State. The game is set to start at 11 a.m. CDT.

Q U O T E S
U-M Head Coach Debbie Rademacher
On the game ... "I thought we played much better in terms of coming out and being prepared. Nebraska plays at a very aggressive level, but we were able to match it. It wasn't a pretty game, but the girls fought hard the entire time."
On the defense ... "I thought that Lindsey Cottrell played really well in man-to-man coverage. Rachel Rothenbach also had a solid performance. Overall, I thought our backs were more organized and came out ready to play."
N O T E S
Erika Kleinholz scored her team-leading second goal of the season, increasing her career total to five. In 69 career games, Kleinholz has tallied 17 points (five goals, seven assists).
Megan Tuura has now allowed just three goals in 355 minutes of action this season.
Michigan now holds a 1-1-1 all-time record against Nebraska.
Michigan's tie with the Huskers marks the second double-overtime match of the season. U-M had two games go to double-overtime twice last season, against Ohio State at the Big Ten Tournament (Nov. 7) and at Michigan State (Oct. 25). Those games resulted in 1-1 ties.
