OXFORD, Ohio -- Running in her first career race wearing the maize and blue, graduate student Jessie Allen-Young (Loveland, Colo./Thompson Valley HS) led the University of Michigan women's cross country team to a first-place finish at the Miami Invitational Saturday morning (Sept. 13). Allen-Young, a 2003 graduate of Dartmouth College, sprinted to the finish line for the individual title, clocking in at 17:38.9 on Miami's Western Campus and she was one of four U-M harriers to place in the top 10 as the Wolverines finished with 33 points en route to the team title.
Allen-Young wasted little time to make an impact on the Michigan lineup as she used a strong kick down the back stretch of the 5,000-meter course to win the individual crown by less than one second. Running side by side with Miami's Andrea Kramer, Allen-Young outkicked the RedHawk senior to the finish line, crossing in 17:38.9 to Kramer's 17:39.6.
Following Allen-Young to the finish line was Rebecca Walter (Beverly Hills, Mich./Groves HS), who finished fourth with a time of 17:53.1. Michigan's two other top 10 finishers were Chelsea Loomis (Traverse City, Mich./West HS) and Chelsea Homan (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson HS). Loomis crossed in eighth (18:08.3) while Homan finished ninth (18:09.7).
Finishing just outside of the top 10 was junior/sophomore Theresa Feldkamp (Lorian, Ohio/Amherst Steele HS) who posted an 11th-place showing with a time of 18:13.2.
The Wolverines have a week off from competition before they head to Minneapolis, Minn., to compete in the Roy Griak Invitational Saturday, Sept. 27, on Les Bolstad Golf Course.

On the race ... "We ran pretty well today. Jessie Allen-Young showed me a lot of toughness winning the race at the line the way she did. Running alongside the girl from Miami with the race nearly over Jessie outkicked her to the finish line for the win. I was also very pleased and impressed by the runs of Chelsea Homan and Theresa Feldkamp as well as all our redshirt freshmen -- Arianne Field, Lesley Jurasek, Jen Frudden, Amy Baker and Laura Broucis -- all of whom posted lifetime bests. We are definitely headed in the right direction."
