The University of Michigan men's soccer (4-2, 0-0 Big Ten) hits the road for the second straight week, as the Wolverines travel to Milwaukee, Wis., for the Marquette Invitational to be held on Marquette University's Valley Fields. Michigan faces Washington on Friday (Sept. 19) at 5:30 p.m. CDT and returns to the pitch to square off with South Florida Sunday (Sept. 21) at 11:30 a.m. CDT.
Scouting the Opponents ...
Washington -- Entering his 12th season as head soccer coach at Washington, Dean Wurzberger has his team off to a 2-0-1 start in 2003 and has plenty of young talent to right the ship from last year when the Huskies finished 6-10-1. For a young team, it is important to have experience at key positions and the Huskies have exactly that with senior goalkeeper Danny Waltman. Sophomore C.J. Klaas, who has two assists this season, leads the attack from the midfield, while Leo Totev leads the attack from the forward position with a team best five points (two goals, one assist). Washington on the Internet: www.gohuskies.com.
South Florida -- Head coach George Kiefer has his Bulls at 3-2-1 on the young season, with three of those games being decided in overtime. In close games, experience will be counted upon and South Florida's defense has plenty of experience with junior Jared Vock leading the way. The entire midfielding corps returns this year with junior Brandon Streicher being the most proven player the Bulls will send out. Youth will be served on the Bulls front line as a combination of young goal scorers will attempt to make their mark. USF is led by 2002 College Soccer News Freshman All-American Hunter West who already has a remarkable seven goals in six games this season. South Florida on the Internet: www.gousfbulls.com.
In Action Last Week ...
The Wolverines split a pair of non-conference friendlies last weekend as the Wolverines fell 1-0 to No. 5 North Carolina in their first game of the Nike Carolina Classic Friday night (Sept. 12). Sophomore Peter Dzubay (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview HS) recorded a career-best nine saves between the pipes. The Maize and Blue returned to the pitch Sunday afternoon (Sept. 14) and rode a program-best four-goal performance from junior forward Mychal Turpin (Plymouth, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit) to a 4-3 overtime win over UNC Greensboro, a team that defeated No. 10 Virginia Commonwealth 3-1 Friday afternoon. Turpin netted one in the first half, one in the second half and one in OT to become only the second player in Michigan history to record a pair of hat tricks. With the match tied 3-3 in overtime, Turpin received a pass from Knox Cameron (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman HS), carried in past the Spartan defense and beat the keeper to his left for the game-winner at 98:14. It marked the Cameron's third assist of the game.
Four for Four ...
Junior forward Mychal Turpin netted a Michigan school-record four goals in the Wolverines' 4-3 overtime victory over UNC Greensboro last Sunday (Sept. 14). Turpin's four-goal effort was one goal better than the previous program mark that he shared with Jrgen Schmieder (2002). Turpin tallied three-goals in U-M's 8-0 win vs. IUPUI (9/5/02) in the 2002 home opener.
He's So Tricky ...
Mychal Turpin became the first Wolverine to tally two natural hat tricks in a career when he scored all four of Michigan's goals in a 4-3 OT victory over UNC Greensboro last Sunday (Sept. 14) at the Nike Carolina Classic. Turpin netted his first career natural hat trick with three goals in the first half of an 8-0 win over IUPUI in 2002. Jrgen Schmieder (2002) has Michigan's only other natural hat trick with three straight goals in the second half of the same game.
The Turpinator ...
With four goals against UNC Greensboro, Mychal Turpin became U-M's all-time leading goal scorer with 19 career tallies in 44 matches. Turpin tied Knox Cameron for the top spot with his second goal of the match against the Spartans, then surpassed his fellow classmate with his goal later in the second half to give the Wolverines a 3-2 advantage with 11 minutes remaining in the match.
Good Point ...
Mychal Turpin's eight-point performance against the Spartans of UNC Greensboro propelled him to the top of Michigan's all-time points list. The junior forward currently has 48 points (19 goals and 10 assists) in 44 career matches. Knox Cameron is second on the list with 45 points (17 goals and 11 assists) in 39 games, while Mike White (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) sits third with 41 points (14 goals and 13 assists) in 59 matches.
Thank You Very Much ...
Knox Cameron set a career high for assists in a season when he helped on three of Mychal Turpin's four goals last Sunday against UNC Greensboro. Cameron now has five assists on the season, just one shy of his two-year career total of six. With 11 career helpers, Cameron ranks third on Michigan's all-time assist list. Sophomore Adam Bruh (Roselyn Heights, N.Y./Wheatley HS) is the program leader with 14.

Head coach Steve Burns is 31-26-3 as the leader of the Michigan men's varsity soccer program through last Sunday (Sept. 14). Last season Burns guided the Maize and Blue to a No. 2 seed in the Big Ten Conference Tournament and its first ever appearance in the championship game. Since Burns took the helm in 2000, the Wolverines have bettered their record in each of his first three years. In the program's inaugural season of 2000, U-M finished with a 6-10 record, while in 2001 his club put together a mark of 10-7-1. Prior to Michigan soccer being granted varsity status on March 26, 1999, Burns was the head coach of the Michigan club team since 1993. Under his leadership, Michigan posted a 121-51-26 mark (.677 winning percentage) and made six consecutive appearances in the national club championship tournament. The team won back-to-back national championships in 1997 and 1998.
