ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's golf team opened its 2003-04 season by hosting the Northern Intercollegiate Saturday (Sept. 20) at the U-M Golf Course, and the Wolverines sit in 13th place after rounds of 300 and 298 for a 36-hole total of 598. Playing as individuals, sophomore Christian Vozza (Traverse City, Mich./Grand Rapids Baptist), in 10th place (74-69/143), and sophomore Brandon Duff (Goodrich, Mich./Powers Catholic), tied for 11th (72-72/144), are the top Wolverines players after the first day of play.
Indiana and Xavier sit tied atop the leaderboard as they both tallied 573 36-hole totals. The Hoosiers opened the tournament with a one-under-par 283 and followed with a 290 in the second. The Musketeers opened with a four-over 288 and followed with a one-over 285 in the second.
Indiana's Jeff Overton sits four strokes ahead of the field with a six-under 136 total after opening with a four-under 67 and following with a two-under 69. Tied for second at 140 are Indiana's Heath Peters (68-72) and Ball State's Patrick Wilkes-Keier (72-68).
Highlighting the Wolverines' first day were a pair of individuals as Vozza and Duff lead the Wolverine charge for medalist honors.
After starting on No. 17 in the shotgun format, Vozza opened the first round by parring his first hole before double-bogeying his second to sit at two-over. After four straight pars, he hit another bogey on No. 5 before striking back with a birdie on No. 6. Bogeys on 8 and 12 were cut by one with his second birdie of the round on No. 11, helping him finish with a three-over 74. In the second round, he parred his first five holes before striking for back-to-back birdies on Nos. 4 and 5 to sit at two-under. Seven pars and another birdie on No. 13 put him at three-under with three holes to play. A bogey on 14 would blemish the round as he finished with a career-best two-under 69.
Starting on No. 18 in both rounds, Duff started off round two with bogeys on the first three holes before finding a rhythm, playing one-under through the next seven holes thanks to a birdie on No. 6. Back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 11 and 12 were countered with birdies on 13 and 15 as he closed the round at one-over 72. The second round started off like the first with a pair of bogeys in the first three holes before he hit his stride again, playing two-under, with birdies on 4 and 11, through the next 12 holes. A double-bogey on No. 15 ended his run, but he finished the round with a birdie on No. 17 to give him his second round of one-over 72. Both rounds were career-best performances for Duff.
Other Wolverine scores include: senior Dave Nichols (Mesa, Ariz./Rochester Adams HS, Mich.), tied for 29th (72-76/148); junior/sophomore Mark McIntosh (Gaylord, Mich./Gaylord HS), tied for 35th (76-73/149); freshman Kevin Dore (Dundas, Ontario/St. Mary's) and senior/junior Rob Tighe (Traverse City, Mich./West HS), tied for 48th (76-75/151 and 77-74/151, respectively); and fifth-year senior Scott Carlton (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS), tied for 73rd (76-78/154).
