Fronzoni Hat Trick Helps U-M Out-Duke James Madison

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The University of Michigan field hockey team put on an offensive clinic Sunday (Sept. 21) at Maryland's Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex, routing James Madison 9-1 to close out its weekend road trip. Seven different Wolverines scored in the win, including senior April Fronzoni (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West HS), who recorded her second hat trick of the year with the game's first three goals.
Michigan (5-3), with wins in five of its last six games, dominated the Dukes, outshooting JMU by a 21-8 margin while taking 12 corners to James Madison's four. Freshman goalkeeper Beth Riley (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra Area HS) got her third win in as many appearances, stopping five of the six shots that went on net.
Fronzoni scored her first two goals just over five minutes apart, netting markers at 2:56 and 8:02 of the first half. After that, the score remained 2-0 until 11 seconds into the second half, when Fronzoni struck again, sparking a seven-goal stanza for the Wolverines. Junior Jessica Blake (Perth, Western Austrailia/St. Mary's Anglican School) and senior Stephanie Johnson (Houston, Texas/The Kinkaid School) made the score 5-0 with goals at 37:36 and 38:59, while junior Anneke Huntzicker (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) and freshman Mary Fox (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) scored twice in four minutes to push the lead to 7-0.
Junior Adrienne Hortillosa (Chula Vista, Calif./Bonita Vista HS) and senior Kristi Gannon (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS) rounded out the scoring for the Wolverines to make it 9-0 before James Madison broke the shutout at 59:51.
Michigan will remain on the road next weekend, opening defense of its Big Ten Conference title on Friday (Sept. 26) at Northwestern. Game time is slated for 3 p.m. CDT at Lakeside Field on the Northwestern campus.

April Fronzoni pushed her career goal total to 59 and now sits five behind Michigan's all-time leader, Mary Callam (64 from 1976-79). In addition, Fronzoni improved her career point total to 133 which is three behind Callam, who recorded a school-record 136 points.
Fronzoni's hat trick was her second of the season and seventh of her career.
Stephanie Johnson has scored a goal in each of her last four outings.
After not scoring a goal in her first two seasons, Anneke Huntzicker has found the back of the cage in two of her last three games.
Sophomore Lori Hillman (Gibbsboro, N.J./Eastern Regional HS) notched her fourth assist of the season and improved her season totals to 1-4-6, eclipsing last season's 22-game totals (2-1-5).
Kristi Gannon recorded a goal and an assist for her first points since Sept. 1 against Wake Forest.
Junior Katy Moyneur (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS) notched her first point of the season with an assist.
Junior Jenny Zangara (Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Hills HS) had a career-high two assists and has recorded a point in three of her last four games. Zangara has 1-4-6 totals this season, marking career highs for assists and points in a campaign.
Adrienne Hortillosa notched a goal and an assist and has 1-5-7 in her last five games, with a point in four of those contests.
Jessica Blake, who has scored a goal in her last two appearances, tied a career high with her third goal of the year. Blake has 3-3-9, marking a career high for points in a campaign.
Mary Fox has scored a goal in each of her last two games. Fox sat out of the Maryland contest.
Redshirt freshman Catherine Pickard (Ann Arbor, Mich./Greenhills School) made her collegiate debut and recorded her first career point with an assist.
