Michigan Goal Drought Persists in Loss at Northwestern

EVANSTON, Ill. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team yielded a first-half goal en route to a 1-0 loss to Northwestern Sunday afternoon (Sept. 21) at the Thomas Sports Complex. The Wolverines outshot Northwestern 6-3 in the game, but a Wildcat corner kick early in the first half resulted in the lone goal of the game.

The Wildcats' score came from senior Molly Greene, who got her head on a corner kick from classmate Aileen Guiney and sent it past freshman goalkeeper Megan Tuura (Tucker, Ga./St. Pius X Catholic HS) at 15:47 of the first half. The Wolverine defense gave a strong effort the rest of the half, allowing just one other shot by NU. Unfortunately, Michigan could not generate any production on the other end of the field, mangaging just three shots in the period.

Greene's goal was all that Northwestern needed, as the Wildcats continued to hold their ground on the defensive end. NU again limited Michigan to three shots in the half, while U-M held Northwestern to just one. The Wolverines' best scoring chance came when junior Laney Rosin (Potomac, Md./Thomas S. Wootton HS) was presented with a breakaway in the open field in the closing half. However, goalkeeper Whitney Jones moved out of the net and beat Rosin to the ball.

The Wolverines (1-4-3, 0-1-1 Big Ten) return to Ann Arbor for their Big Ten home opener against Wisconsin on Friday (Sept. 26). The match is slated for 4 p.m. at the U-M Soccer Field.
